FORCE stages new autumn cycle rides

FORCE Cancer Charity is staging one of its popular fundraising cycle events this weekend (October 1) with a new twist.

There’s a different location for the charity’s autumn ride this year and for the first time there’s also a choice of two distances.

FORCE’s Autumn Series features the 55-mile Autumn Storm challenge and the Autumn Breeze, a 30-mile route to mark the charity’s 30th anniversary.

Sunday’s rides start and finish at Clyst Vale Community College in Broadclyst. Cyclists will be on staggered starts in small batches from 8-8:30am.

90 children look forward to starting school in Broadclyst

Broadclyst Community Primary School (BCPS) will welcome 60 new children to its reception class in September, and its sister school, Westclyst Community Primary School (WCPS) will gain 30 reception pupils.

Primary academy trust to run ‘virtual’ online open days

An East Devon primary school trust is holding ‘virtual’ online open days over the next few weeks, using technology to help parents decide on the right school for their children. The events will take place on 15 and 23 November and 6 December, and there will also be conventional open events on 22 and 30 November.

Parents can register for the virtual open days at Broadclyst and Westclyst Community Primary Schools by visiting www.bcps.org.uk/open-evenings or www.wcps.education/open-evenings to book their place. They will then be emailed instructions for attending.

Young global entrepreneurs attend Broadclyst School’s awards presentation at Microsoft offices in London

The young entrepreneurs who won the 2016 Global Enterprise Challenge (GEC) run by Broadclyst Community Primary School (BCPS) picked up their awards from Sir Hugo Swire MP (pictured with one of the winning teams) and from Microsoft’s Vice-President of Worldwide Education, Anthony Salcito at the new Microsoft offices in London on 12 October. The awards presentation was the culmination of the 2015-16 GEC, in which 700 students aged between 9 and 12, in 200 teams across 20 countries, participated.

Killerton gears up for classic car takeover

National fame for farming couple

WINNING top awards for their produce has secured local farmers Neil and Sally Grigg a feature in a prestigious national magazine.

Neil and Sally, who run a farm near Broadclyst, are featured in this week’s Country Life magazine.

The couple are tenants on a 400 acre National Trust farm which is part of the Killerton Estate, where they have been farming their own herd of Red Ruby cattle since 2007. This month’s Country Life, features them talking about their entry into farming, following careers as an accountant and rural surveyor.

Fire crews tackle Broadclyst blaze

Fire crews from Exeter were called to tackle a blaze at a property in New Buidlings, Broadclsyt on Monday evening (22 February).

On arrival, crews confirmed the fire to be in the front room, and crews got to work using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet and two dry powder extinguishers, together with a thermal image camera.

Crews on scene assisted with first aid to a man suffering smoke inhalation while waiting for ambulance crews to arrive.

At 10.10pm crews confirmed the fire was out and confirmed the fire was located within the ground floor...

Man rescued from flood water near Exeter

A man was rescued from his car after becoming trapped in flood water near Exeter this morning.

One fire appliance from Exeter Danes Castle, one from Exeter Middlemoor and the boat from Exmouth were mobilised to Burrow Road in Broadclyst at 5.30am, after reports of a person trapped in their vehicle in flood water.

On arrival, fire crews confirmed that the vehicle was in flood water, contact was made with the person trapped inside.

Crews used water safety equipment to escort the male from the vehicle to safety.

Burrow Road has been closed due to the flooding...
