Think about what's in your bonfire before you burn it

People planning bonfires next week are urged to avoid burning items that harm the environment.

It is illegal to burn most types of waste and setting fire to treated wood, tyres, plastics, rubber and oil can seriously harm health and pollute the environment.

The Environment Agency advises people holding their own bonfires:

  • Make sure waste is kept securely before being burned
  • Make sure the material being burned is suitable - it may include untreated wood, branches, and small amounts of leaves, cardboard and paper; never include plastics, rubber, glass

The Environment Agency is asking people planning a Guy Fawkes bonfire to make sure they only burn paper, leaves, wood and cardboard and any waste is kept securely before being burned.

Every year families use old bits of furniture to build up a bonfire and stuff the Guy with scraps of used foam or old clothing. Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service is urging residents to only buy fireworks from reputable traders.

As the fireworks season approaches many people will consider buying fireworks for private functions to mark events including Halloween and Bonfire Night. 30ft burning effigy of Katie Hopkins

A town in Kent is burning a 30ft effigy of former Apprentice contestant Katie Hopkins in its annual bonfire night celebrations.

The giant steel framed model will be stuffed with fireworks and oil stuffed paper before being lit on Saturday (2 November).

Devon based Hopkins has drawn widespread criticism for her views childhood obesity and children’s names is the latest in a long line of famous (and infamous) figures to be burnt in the Kent town of Edenbridge.

Former guy’s include Wayne Rooney, disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong and Cherie Blair.
