A charity founder from Exmouth has scooped a prestigious award that will see her travel America researching new approaches to suicide prevention and bereavement to benefit UK families.

Alison Jordan, CEO of Pete’s Dragons, is among 150 people to be selected from nearly 1,800 applicants to win a Churchill Fellowship.

The grant means Alison can embark on a once-in-a-lifetime trip across the Atlantic and spend two months in the USA later this year.

An on-call firefighter at Danes Castle will be taking part in the Trans-America Bike Race in June 2018 to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity and Wooden Spoon Devon.

The race involves cycling 4,300 miles across 10 US states in around a month.

Dying Exeter mum Jo Smith has released an emotional video as part of her desperate attempt to raise funds to go to America for treatment.

In it, her five-year-old son Rudey makes a heart-breaking plea for help.

In it he says: "My mummy needs to go to America to get better."

New Devon artist sells painting in US

Ottery St Mary-based artist, Abi Whitlock, is celebrating the successful sale of her first artwork through online art marketplace, Artfinder, just days after she joined the site.

The 23 year old whose application to sell on the site was approved on Saturday 5 September, sold one of her hyper-real acrylic paintings, ‘Adrift’ to a customer in Illinois on Monday 7 September for the list price of £3,400.

Abi has only recently committed to her art full time, recently moving to Devon with family after graduating from catering college.

University of Exeter historian, Professor Richard Overy has been shortlisted for a new American military history prize for his book ‘The Bombing War: Europe, 1939-1945’.
