Police appeal after three-vehicle collision near Newton Poppleford

Police are appealing for witnesses after three vehicles were involved in a road traffic collision on Saturday 16 March near Newton Poppleford. The collision happened at around 3.30pm on the A3052, one mile west of Newton Poppleford, near Sidmouth. Fire and ambulance crews attended the collision which involved a Suzuki Wagon, an Audi A3 and an Audi A4. The female driver of the Suzuki, from Exeter, was airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with serious back and leg injuries. An elderly man travelling in one of the other vehicles sustained a head injury which was not serious....

Upton Pyne Hill closed due to serious accident

Update: This incident has now cleared.

1.30pm: Upton Pyne Hill remains closed due to an earlier accident. No further details have been released of the number of vehicles involved or any injuries.

Upton Pyne Hill in Upton Pyne is reported to be closed around the Burridge Road junction, because of a serious accident. Recovery work is currently being carried out to clear the accident.

Prank puts lives at risk in Honiton

Offenders put the lives of police officers at risk by tampering with road signs on a blind bend near Honiton. The culprits dragged two large temporary triangular warning signs and sandbags into the middle of the A30 near Yarcombe in the early hours of Saturday (2 March). The signs had been by the side of the road on a blind bend in a wooded area at Hilltop. A police unit and ambulance on a 999 call to help a person with medical difficulties had to take emergency action to avoid a collision. Word of warning to thatched cottage owners

In the early hours of this morning a couple lost their home to fire. The property was a thatched cottage in North Devon. Maxine Wilcox, 68, was awoken by her cat at about 4.00am when she noticed that their thatched roof was alight. The couple immediately left the property and called Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Mr and Mrs Wilcox waited outside while firefighters tackled the blaze and salvaged as much of their belongings as they could. A total of 15 fire appliances attended the incident.

Final phase for single ambulance service approach

Plans to create a single ambulance service for the South West are nearing completion with a recommendation to approve the process now with the Secretary of State for Health.

Approval will see South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) take on services currently provided by Great Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust (GWAS) from 1st February 2013 – creating an organisation serving a resident population of over 5.3 million people.

NHS Direct staff in Exeter face redundancies

Southwest Ambulance Trust plans to absorb staff from the defunct NHS Direct site at Exeter have run into trouble and staff have been told that the takeover could lead to redundancies.

As of Monday 4th November over 30 staff from the NHS Direct site in Exeter were transferred into the new Southwest Ambulance NHS Trust Service at Sowton.

They will continue to provide the 111 service for Somerset, but are now under control of the Ambulance Service as an employer.

It is understood that NHS direct are now in the process of making several staff redundant from the Exeter...
