Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has published its advice trend statistics for January 2016.

The charity has recruited 37 more volunteers over the last 12 months and this is reflected in the January results, with the charity helping 34% more people with their advice and information needs since April 2015.

Gritters out on Devon's roads as snow and ice forecast

Gritters are out on Devon’s main salting routes this afternoon as temperatures are set to dip below zero later.

With freezing conditions forecast across the county, road surface temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as -3.3C in East Devon from early this evening, and icy patches may be a problem in areas of the county affected by water run-off following recent rainfall.

The County Council is advising people to take extreme care if travelling overnight and tomorrow morning, particularly on untreated roads.

Thatch fire warning after Devon pub blaze

Firefighters have issued a warning to owners of thatched properties.

The warning comes following a fire which destroyed the Ring of Bells pub in North Bovey yesterday (Wednesday 13 January).

Ten fire engines attended the incident and fire crews worked throughout the night to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby thatched properties. A crew is still at the scene today to dampen down hotspots.

Exeter CAB 'Click or Call' service a success

Leading local advice charity Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau is reporting that its new ‘Click or Call’ advice and information service has been a big success since it was launched in July, with more than 1000 calls answered in the last three months.

A further 176 people have used the new webchat facility, and a pilot email service has recently been launched.

Anyone who rents a property and wants to find out more about their rights can attend an open day on Monday 26 October.

The drop-in event has been organised by the Exeter Private Rental Forum and will be held in Bedford Square, Princesshay, between 11am and 2pm.

A stall will provide details of what resources are available to people who rent, and where to turn to for help and advice if there are problems. There will be information on tenant’s rights, responsibilities and general housing advice.
