Citizens Advice Exeter welcomes Taylor Review with reservations

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, says that the recent Matthew Taylor review of modern employment practices includes many proposals which would help people currently at the sharp end of insecure work but says that enhanced rights and protections will require more effective enforcement.

The review report was published last month.

In the last year the charity has helped people with 1,074 enquiries about issues they were having at work. The main issues being:

Public Health leaders are offering advice on how to beat the heat, in the wake of news today of a continued heat wave.

The Met Office has forecast that the hot weather will now continue until Thursday and Public Health England South West is issuing heatwave advice to local authorities across the peninsula.

2,8841 people from Devon accessed vital cancer advice and support in 2016, thanks to the Macmillan Mobile Cancer Information service. The Macmillan mobile information bus – affectionately known as Bertie – has been parked up in town centres, rural communities, and events across the South West throughout the year. The Post Office is reminding customers that the CWU has called strike action in 300 of its 11,600 branches on Saturday 24th December, which may result in the closure of some of these branches.

Two calls every hour to deal with animals struggling in the heat

The RSPCA has urged pet owners and farmers to keep their animals cool in the summer heat as temperatures rocket to 30C in some parts of England and Wales this week.

The animal welfare charity is issuing advice after a surge in calls relating to animals and heat exposure last month. The charity’s 24-hour emergency line received 1,606 calls in July - that’s two every hour or more than 50 a day - from concerned members of the public reporting dogs shut in hot vehicles, farm animals out in the heat, and horses without shade.
