New speech and language courses to help young children catch up after COVID-19

Research conducted in schools last year revealed that the coronavirus pandemic, with its lockdowns and restrictions, held back many young children's speech and language development.

So, Devon County Council has created new courses which are available to parents and carers, and staff who work with children and young people, to help children catch up and reach their potential.

Trainer Dan Skelton is bullish about the chances of Third Time Lucki in the Betway Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter on Friday ( 4th November ) – day one of The West Country Weekend.

Trading Standards warn of loan sharks as households borrow to meet rising costs

More than a quarter of people are resorting to using credit cards to buy food, and a fifth have borrowed money in order to pay for rising prices, it’s reported .

A poll by Ipsos, carried out for Sky News, shows that 18 per cent of respondees have borrowed money in the last year to pay for rising costs of living.

“Borrowing from reputable sources is one thing, but people, who are already struggling to pay their bills, resorting to borrowing from back-street lenders and loan sharks, is something to be really concerned about,” says Steve Gardiner of Heart of the South West...

Queen Street cycle lane plans scrapped

Plans previously agreed to make the one-way layout of Exeter’s Queen Street permanent are being scaled back due to “significant increases” in costs.

An organisation that supports people in poverty in Exeter and Torquay has won a community award from leading builders merchant Selco.

Punk Against Poverty CIC has secured £500 worth of building materials through its Community Heroes campaign.

The organisation provides free school uniforms to children in need and will use the materials to help fix the roof at one of its two fundraising shops in Torbay.
