Force chopper scrambled after driver flees police

The Devon & Cornwall Police helicopter was scrambled yesterday when a driver sped off after being approached by police.

The man had pulled into the Texaco garage on Honiton Road when an officer attempted to speak to him.

According to one witness, he sped away, leaving his passenger behind.

The Police chopper was seen hovering over the Wonford area soon after, before flying off towards Exminster.

The motorist, who asked not to be named, told The Exeter Daily that the driver fled the moment he saw the officer....

Cold weather bin collections go digital to improve service

Exeter City Council has turned to technology to tell residents about disruptions to refuse collections caused by bad weather.

Live information from refuse lorries is set to be beamed back to the authority’s website, informing residents of any problems caused by snow and ice.

A city council spokesman said: “We know that in times of extremely adverse weather conditions where residential roads have not been cleared of snow and ice by the Highways Authority, that it may become unsafe for our refuse collection vehicles to travel along those roads, or the roads may be blocked by...

Earl of Wessex to officially open city's greenest school

The Earl of Wessex will officially open Exeter’s Greenest school later this month.

His Royal Highness will visit Montgomery Primary in St Thomas which has been formally certified as England’s first zero-carbon school.

The Devon County Council school is one of the Greenest buildings in the UK and generates all its own electricity – and a surplus – from an array of solar panels on the roof.

The innovative, air-tight Passivhaus design means it doesn’t need a boiler to provide heating.

The experience of shopping in Exeter is set to rocket to new heights with the launch of the new John Lewis store on the corner of Sidwell Street, which opens its doors to the public at 9am on Friday 12th October. The Exeter Daily was lucky enough to take a sneak peek around the sophisticated store with manager Kate Connock, whose staff are busily preparing for a smooth launch. Multi-million pound flood defence scheme planned for Exeter

Devon County Council is set to invest £3 million into a vital flood relief scheme for Exeter.

The council's cabinet will be asked to approve the contribution at its meeting on Wednesday (10 October).

And senior councillors will press the Environment Agencyto try to bring forward the projected start of the scheme from January 2017.

They will hear that efforts to accelerate the £25 million scheme are dependent on raising £12 million locally.

That would be added to the £13 million national grant which the scheme is expected to attract.

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter hailed his side as "exceptional" as they maintained their unbeaten home record in the Aviva Premiership with a comprehensive 42-28 victory over Harlequins at Sandy Park.

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale says he isn't going to get too downhearted after his side lost 2-0 at home to Port Vale on Satuday.

The visitors scored in each half to to deny the Grecians any points.

Steve Tully thought he'd equalised but saw his header hit the crossbar.

Vale's Tim Pope made Exeter pay when he fired home his second goal and there wass no coming back for the home side.
