Aspiring tenants behind right to buy surge

The numbers of tenants taking up the ‘Right to Buy’ their council home has more than doubled.

Figures published recently show that the number of homes sold between April 2012 and April 2013 totalled 5,942, more than double the number sold in the previous year and the highest numbers of sales since 2007.

These 5,942 sales have generated £368 million in gross income. Receipts from these additional sales will be recycled back into new affordable homes for rent.

Devon schools in national initiative to develop dementia-friendly communities

Seven Devon schools are taking part in a pioneering initiative to help develop dementia-friendly communities.

It’s part of a challenge set by Prime Minister David Cameron to develop community awareness of people living with dementia.

The seven schools will be taking part in a celebration event with some of the older people they have worked with in Exeter today (Monday 20 May).

The schools are Clyst Heath and St Leonard’s primaries and St Luke’s College in Exeter, Tavistock Community College, Okehampton College Copplestone Primary and Spreyton School.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has had its approach to occupational safety and health recognised in an awards scheme run by the safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Devon and Cornwall Police are growing more concerned for the safety of Magdalena Krawiec (pronounced Crab-ic), a 20-year-old Polish woman missing from Paignton and are renewing their appeal to the public to help trace her. Magdalena was last seen on CCTV leaving the place she was staying in Paignton at 8pm on Tuesday 14 May 2013. Equality South West calls on South West MPs to back same-sex marriage

Equality South West (ESW) is calling on MPs in the region to back same-sex marriage when the issue returns to the House of Commons today.
