My response to today's Spending Review announcement

The focus of today’s Spending Review should have been clear and decisive action to boost growth and living standards this year and next year — not simply setting out cuts for two years’ time. David Cameron and George Osborne are failing to deliver on investing in infrastructure. In Exeter and the Westcountry we need that investment to boost growth and create jobs.

Exeter’s flood defences are in dire need of upgrading to protect homes, business and our rail connections. People desperately need more affordable homes for rent. As Ed Miliband revealed in Parliament today, only a tiny...

Your old unwanted scrap car can help ELF!

Three years ago, Exeter Leukaemia Fund was one of the first charities to join forces with Giveacar, which was a new non-profit social enterprise that encourages car owners to scrap or sell their old unwanted cars in a professional manner, giving the proceeds to the charity of their choice. From small beginnings like ELF, Giveacar has grown from dealing with 7 cars per month to 50 per week. Recently they reached a milestone of £1 million donated to charities all over the UK, with Giveacar receiving many awards. During this period ELF supporters have taken part in this scheme with the latest...

East Devon District Council definitive 'No' to homeless hotel 'plan'

Plans for supporting homeless people in East Devon will not be amended to include new hotel accommodation in Exmouth, it was confirmed this week.

With numbers of homeless people housed in B&Bs at historically low levels anyway, EDDC bosses have rubbished allegations that the town’s new Premier Inn is being lined up to use for such a purpose.

NONSENSE

"Claims that plans are afoot for EDDC to ask Premier Inn to help house the homeless are fanciful nonsense," said Cllr Jill Elson, EDDC Cabinet Member for Sustainable Homes and Communities. "We have certainly not...

Fire Service and Police combine forces to help you stay safe on the road

A speed awareness event recently took place at Middlemoor Fire Station, with Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service working alongside Devon and Cornwall Police. Sidmouth Road outside Middlemoor fire station was targeted and education was the focus of the day.

PC Steve Parsons, Neighbourhood Beat Manager for the area said: “It is ideal for us to be working with Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service and make people more aware of the 30 miles an hour speed limit on this road, people just don’t realise. It is a very busy road and the fire service has been having...
