Exeter's Right Honourable Lord Mayor Councillor Rachel Lyons attended a dazzling display of talent by Stage by Stage students on Sunday 14 July at Exeter Corn Exchange.
Stage by Stage is Exeter's independent theatre arts school, and the Mayor was there to present certificates and special prizes to its students.
The gala, which is an annual event, this year also celebrated the 20th anniversary of Stage by Stage and featured musical and dance numbers drawn from the last two decades of shows which have been performed by the school in the city and around the UK....

The Exeter Spitfires are now past the half way point in their first season in the South West Baseball League. It has been an excellent inaugural season so far for the club in a number of ways.
The Spitfires have already gained their first ever win, something that was not necessarily expected against more experienced teams and, although they have suffered 18-15 and 19-9 losses to the Bristol Bats and a 9-0 loss to the Plymouth Mariners in their last three games, improvement was shown in a couple of those games as the players gain more experience.

As of yesterday, same-sex couples will be able to get married in England and Wales after new measures became law.
This movement has been welcomed by the more accepting population of England and Wales, and perhaps opened the eyes of those less supportive.
The Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat leaderships all backed the proposals, which were finally approved by MPs and peers earlier this week.
Maria Miller, the equalities minister, said marriage would remain the “bedrock” of society but would now be open to same-sex couples as well as heterosexuals.
Exeter has been named amongst one of the UK’s rent hotspots where private rents may be off-limits to many households.
A report by the Resolution Foundation has found that Exeter is among places where the cost of rent exceeds the income of many households even on a modest property.
Across the UK, 125 of the 376 local authorities studied were shown to have a rent which was unaffordable on a £22,000 net income. For family with an income of £19,000, nearly half of the studied areas were unaffordable.
The report claims that the root of the problem is a UK-wide housing...

Everyone wants to get in on the graduation festivities at Exeter– even the animals! The University of Exeter’s resident gorilla, currently based in the Forum, is the result of a competition in which students were set the task of designing their very own Great Gorilla.
More than 70 fun and innovative entries were put forward and the winning design was Meriel Royal’s globetrotting Gorilla. Meriel, a third year English undergraduate, was inspired by the idea of the Gorilla making stops around the world and collecting stamps of other endangered animals, before finally arriving in Devon...
