Slimming World Consultant Penni Ball has proved she's red hot after winning a Ruby Award for her work in helping tackle obesity in the area.

Penni who runs the Pinhoe Slimming World groups at America Hall, was delighted to receive the award for inspiring dozens of people in the local community to start losing weight and improve their health.

The accolade sees Penni, who lost 3.5 stone with Slimming World herself, become a Ruby Consultant.

Furniture Village raises vital funds for Cancer Charity

Furniture Village stores, including the Exeter branch, have worked together to raise over £1,700 for a blood cancer charity.

In 2013 all fourty branches helped to raise vital funds for charity by putting sofa shaped collection boxes in their stores refreshment areas.

The funds donated by customers whilst enjoying a tea or coffee helped the company raise a staggering £1,714 for the Anthony Nolan Register.

The Anthony Nolan Register enables those who need a blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant to find matching donors.

Dawlish Line could re-open early

Work on to re-open the railway line could be completed earlier than expected, according to Network Rail. The work to repair the area of track destroyed during the recent heavy storms was initially expected to be completed by mid-March but was pushed back to mid-April after further storm damage frustrated repairs. However the Rail Minister, Steve Hammond, said the rail company had given a “commitment” that “if they can beat that target they will.” He continued: "Network Rail had a good weekend last weekend and they have had some 20-hour days." Monday night wins for EGCC's tennis first teams

Monday was a good night for Exeter Golf and Country Club’s men's and ladies tennis first teams.

The men beat Kingsteignton 8-1 thanks to a fantastic 15-13 win in a championship tie-break for John Wilton-Davies and Tim Agutter, coming from 9-4 down to clinch the deciding set.

Exeter Golf and Country Club’s first pair Adam Tapp and James Temple also continued their record of not having dropped a set this season.

EDDC wins pig farm appeal

East Devon District Council has successfully defended its decision to refuse planning permission for a pig unit comprising two buildings, slurry store, attenuation pond and access track at Collyhead Farm, Venn Ottery.

In a decision announced today (Monday 24 February), Planning Inspector Pete Drew concludes that the proposed development “would harm the character and appearance of this designated landscape”.

WESC Foundation to host Open Day

On 27 February 2014, WESC Foundation will host an Academies Open Day aimed at informing teachers, principals, Special Education Needs (SEN) professionals and anyone who works with visually impaired young people in an academy setting on how they can best support learners with a visual impairment.

Campaigners against proposed cuts to Devon County Council’s youth service have said they are considering legal action as they believe the authority may have violated international law.

The dispute came to a head last Thursday when 17-year-old campaigner Alfie Weaver was denied a chance to address the council at a meeting to set the council’s budget for 2014/15.

The budget included a reduction of nearly £1m to the council’s youth service which could potentially see the closure of the council’s youth centres after the completion of a consultation process.

Central United 2 v 2 Tiverton Youth A close fought match on Saturday 22 February saw Central United unlucky not to get all 3 points having been 2-0 up and seemingly in full control of the game well into the second half. Tiverton showed great resilience and perseverance to keep at it and were rewarded with 2 goals to even the score, and send both sides home with equal points.

No doubt the lack of recent matches for United showed in the first 15 minutes as the boys looked a bit ragged and disorganised. They then found their rhythm in the second 15 of the half with some lovely...
