Watch the birdie! Cameras at the Wetlands

East Devon District Council's Countryside team are pleased to have their own version of ‘Springwatch’ going on right now at the Axe Estuary Wetlands.

Cameras have been set up in two of the nest boxes on the nature reserve, allowing visitors to watch the fascinating comings and goings of nesting Blue Tit and Kestrel pairs live on monitor screens in the Information Centre.

Deafinite Interpreters sign DCC contract

An Exeter-based agency of British Sign Language interpreters has been awarded the contract by Devon County Council to be its preferred supplier of interpreters.

According to recent research the Deaf community is suffering as a result of lack of access to BSL interpreters, with many suffering health issues due to reasons such as a lack of information, poor communication, and unnecessary difficulties in getting to the doctor in the first place. A short film by a University of Exeter film student has been selected to be showcased as part of Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Aygul Bakanova’s film the‘Void’, includes famous actors and is the product of collaboration with the Danish director Milad Alami. The film takes place on a ferry from Køge to Bornholm, a Danish island in the Baltic Sea. It features a star-studded cast including Lars Mikkelsen of The Killing, Borgen and Sherlock fame, and Game of Thrones actor Dar Salim. A night under the stars for Hospiscare ladies

More than 350 women from Exeter, mid and east Devon enjoyed a walk along the seaside town of Exmouth Seafront on May 10 in support of Hospiscare, their local hospice charity.

The 12k walk started and finished at Exmouth rugby club with spectacular views along the seaside and through the nearby countryside to raise money for the charity.

'Inspirational' fundraiser dies aged 19

Stephen Sutton a 19-year-old who raised more than £3.2m for charity has died peacefully in his sleep, his mother said on his Facebook page.

The teenager from Burntwood in Staffordshire, was diagnosed with terminal cancer aged 15 but resolved to overcome his illnesss to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust .

In the months leading to his death Stephen's fundraising efforts acheived world wide recognition through social media.

In a post announcing Stephen's death his mother, Jane Sutton, said he was a "courageous, selfless, inspirational son".
