New Mamhead Slipway moves a step closer

The planning application for a new, improved public slipway at Mamhead View, Exmouth, has been submitted and should be considered for approval before the end of the year.

The existing slipway had to be closed in August 2012 for public safety reasons. Surveys showed that the fill material supporting the concrete slab of the slipway had been scoured away.

Specialist consultants have been employed to examine options for a replacement slipway, and to carry out the necessary geotechnical and environmental surveys needed to support a planning application.

Family pay tribute to teen who died in crash

The family of a Cullompton teenager who died in a motorcycle collision have paid a moving tribute to him.

Eighteen-year-old Mason Jones died from his injuries after the Yamaha motorcycle he was travelling on was involved in a collision at around 10.30pm last Tuesday (22 July) on the A3440 near Uffculme.

Ebola Virus risk remains low in UK

Public Health England (PHE) is continuing to monitor the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD, Ebola) outbreak in West Africa, but advises the risk to the UK remains very low.

No cases of imported Ebola have ever been reported in the UK. Ebola is a form of viral haemorrhagic fever and currently more than 1000 cases have been reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, of which there have been more than 650 deaths. This is the first documented Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and it is the largest ever known outbreak of this disease.

A local community café has been shortlisted for a high profile national award by UK charity and leading awarding body in deaf communications, Signature.

Exeter’s Café 55 has been named as one of four contenders in the Community Spirit category at the 2014 Signature Annual Awards.

Cycling heroes preview Devon stage of the Tour of Britain

Professional cycling stars past and present will help launch this year’s Devon Stage of the Friends Life Tour of Britain.

Over 200 players took part in the gents 4 Man team open. The club got extremely lucky with the weather given that a severe weather warning had been issued. Otter Nurseries answers SOS from TV gardener

Otter Nurseries staff recently sprang into action after receiving an SOS phone call from Alan Titchmarsh.

The celebrity gardener was creating a garden in Bideford for his TV show, Love Your Garden and wanted to know if the East Devon garden centre had a ready supply of the specific plants needed for his garden design.

Hardy nursery worker Carla Ward-Best said: “At first we thought it was a wind up, but there’s no mistaking his voice. He was very knowledgeable about the plants he wanted, too.”
