Bumper honey crop from SW bees

Beekeepers across the South West of England have reported an average yield of 30lbs of honey per colony this year according to the findings of the British Beekeepers Association¹s annual Honey Survey, released today (26 November, 2014).

The survey revealed a substantial 36 per cent increase on the 22lbs per colony reported by South West of England beekeepers in 2013, and is a far cry from the 7lbs per colony nadir of 2012.

The reported yield across the country is 32lbs per colony, a 28 per cent increase on the 25lbs per colony reported in 2013.

Four of Swords terrified sell-out audiences with its version of Christopher Marlowe's classic play Doctor Faustus, performed at Exeter's 900 year old St Nicholas Priory for Hallowe’en 2014.

The Exeter theatre company has now developed a spin-off show which will be performed at The Devon and Exeter Institution in Cathedral Close. There will be just three exclusive performances of Dr Faustus Presents An Evening of Renaissance Magic, 16th and 30th January and 13th February

It is not a re-run, but a new kind of play which blends story-telling with music, film...

People across Devon are being urged to pledge to go red for HIV Testing Week (this week) and World AIDS Day (1 December 2014)

The Eddystone Trust, the local HIV and sexual health charity, and Devon County Council which is the strategic lead for Public Health in the county have joined forces to promote better HIV awareness in Devon

There are an estimated 107,800 people in the UK living with HIV, with over 300 Devon residents (aged 15-59) accessing HIV care; although it is estimated that one in four are unaware they have the condition.

The aim of HIV testing week is...

Significant changes to the preferred location of new council offices in East Devon will be discussed at cabinet next week (Wednesday, 3 December).

Cabinet will hear the latest developments since it was last reported in February and how changing market conditions mean that SkyPark is no longer the preferred option.

Whilst SkyPark has been the leading contender as the relocation site, the council was very clear that no decision was going to be made on the final location until all the facts and figures were known with other key pieces in what is a complex jigsaw slotting in to...

Bateman says Chiefs boys are buzzing

Greg Bateman believes lessons learnt last season by the Exeter Chiefs are paying dividends this term with the Devon club riding high in the Aviva Premiership.

Rob Baxter’s side finished last season’s Premiership campaign in eighth spot, matching the same position that they finished in their inaugural season amongst English rugby’s elite.

It was a disappointing outcome for the Chiefs, especially having landed top six finishes in their two previous seasons.

There were, however, mitigating factors according to head coach Baxter, who not only saw his side slip to a...

Greens respond to redevelopment plans

The Green Party in Exeter has broadly welcomed the redevelopment of the bus station site, particularly the emphasis on leisure uses including a swimming pool, but has repeated their call for a new market square.

They have also welcomed plans to develop the site to BREEAM environmental standards and the swimming pool to passivhaus standards.

The Party says that such standards are crucial not only to tackle climate change but also to create buildings which are more affordable to run.

However, Greens question whether the current plans are economically viable and are...

Mammoth plaudits for Exeter's RAMM

It was a mammoth occasion when Wool-I–Am met Gerald the Giraffe at Exeter's museum.

Wool-I-Am is the icon of Ipswich Museum and was named this autumn when hundreds of Radio 2 fans of the Chris Evans show took part in an impromptu competition.

Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) is one of the UK museums most admired by Ipswich Borough Council's culture chief Bryony Rudkin, so when she attended a management conference in the city she took Wool-I-Am along.

"I am quite a frequent visitor to RAMM," Councillor Rudkin said. "I am eager to learn more from our...

Skydive for charity and be a record breaker

In June next year, 333 fundraisers will jump from 15,000 feet to break the Guinness World Record.

Skydive UK Ltd is one of the biggest skydiving schools in the UK. They have started a search for over 300 brave fundraisers who will skydive for charity and attempt to break the existing record.

The current Guinness World Record for the most tandem skydives within 24 hours is 281 and is also held by Skydive UK.

“We know we can do more. We will prove this by breaking our own record, aiming for 333,” said Jason Farrant, managing director of Skydive UK.
