Leading Devon-based stove manufacturer, Dean Forge, is launching a new showroom in Exeter, with an open day on Saturday 12 September.

Customers will be able to take advantage of a fantastic one-off promotion of up to 50% off selected stoves and huge savings on leading brands, including Dean Forge’s own range. The new venue – located in Marsh Barton, near the Porsche Garage – will celebrate local craftsmanship, stocking products hand-made in its factory in Buckfastleigh, Devon.

Family raises £6,200 for two Exeter charities

A family braved gale force winds during a 955 sponsored cycle ride to raise money for two Exeter charities who cared for their mum. Four members of Kathryn Hall’s family spent nine days in the saddle cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

So far the team has raised £6,200 for Hospiscare and FORCE, the local charities which supported Kathryn Hall, from Silverton, who died in March 2014.

The cyclists faced strong winds, lashing rain and more than nine miles of vertical ascent.

Haldon Forest – Obstacle Run Series

The GoHARD Obstacle Run Series is a 3km and 6km run incorporating various obstacles, including a camouflage net crawl, a Bulgarian bag carry, log lunge, farmers walk, balance beam and ‘over and under’ hurdles. Failure to cross the balance beam will see competitors tasting dirt as they are then made to execute 5 solid burpees. The ‘over and under’ hurdles include a series of solid 6ft walls, intermixed with low beams requiring good upper body strength and agility. The course is suited for all abilities and the entry cost of £22 includes an event vest, with spot prizes for the event winners...

Valuables stolen from car in East Devon

Police officers from Ottery St Mary are reminding people to take their personal items with them after a parked car was broken into and valuables stolen.

The theft took place just before 3pm and 4.30pm on Thursday 13 August at White Cross Cark Park, East Hill, Ottery St Mary.

A blue Nissan X-Trail had the window smashed and personal items worth over a thousand pounds was stolen.

Amongst the items stolen was a pink iPhone 5, a black Mulberry wallet, Pierre Cardin glasses, a large blue leather handbag, cash and credit cards.

Pinhoe Library to get free Wi-Fi

Library users in Pinhoe, Exeter, are getting a helping hand with using the internet as part of a new nationwide digital inclusion initiative.

Devon County Council has joined forces with BT and Barclays as part of their campaign to bring free Wifi and hands-on digital support to communities across the UK.

The County Council’s library in Pinhoe is one of 100 UK centres taking part in the initiative, which aims to support the Government’s Digital Inclusion strategy to reduce the number of people offline in the UK by 25% by 2016.

Ottery shoppers support Devon beavers

One of East Devon’s most long-lived independent shops has been fundraising for Devon’s newest wild animals. Staff at Roberts, Ottery St Mary’s venerable hardware and homeware shop, decided to support the River Otter beavers by setting up a fundraising book and DVD stall in the store. Donated items raise funds for the River Otter Beaver Trial, the Devon Wildlife Trust-led project that convinced the Government to allow the beavers to stay in the wild – and is now monitoring the beaver population and its effects for the next five years.
