Pioneering new research by the University of Exeter could pave the way for miniaturised optical circuits and increased internet speeds, by helping accelerate the ‘graphene revolution’.

Physicists from the University of Exeter in collaboration with the ICFO Institute in Barcelona have used a ground-breaking new technique to trap light at the surface of the wonder material graphene using only pulses of laser light.

Crucially, the team of scientists have also been able to steer this trapped light across the surface of the graphene, without the need for any nanoscale devices....

It’s easy to assume that domestic abuse is an issue that only affects partners or ex-partners within a relationship. However, an increasingly more common form of abuse, with potentially devastating results, is set to challenge those inherent beliefs.

Since 2011, in Devon alone, there have been two domestic homicide cases where the murderer is in fact the victim’s child. The child in question is not a young adolescent, but a grown-up adult child in their 20s or 30s.

The cases prompted the Safer Devon Partnership to launch an initiative to raise awareness of domestic abuse...

£500,000 reconstruction scheme for Trow Hill

A major £500,000 investment to reconstruct the A3052 near Sidmouth will get underway in January.

Trow Hill will be reconstructed and resurfaced between Steven’s Cross and Dunscombe Lane, as part of a seven week programme of essential maintenance unveiled by Devon County Council.

Ahead of the resurfacing work, drainage improvements are programmed to start from Monday 4 January 2016. This is anticipated to take three weeks to complete.

Drinkaware Club Hosts pilot launches

Devon and Cornwall Police have joined up the alcohol education charity Drinkaware to launch a pilot initiative in the region which aims to keep people safe at night.

Drinkaware in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Tony Hogg, and the Safer partnerships have launched a six month pilot of Club Hosts at nightclubs across the peninsula.

The Club Hosts scheme started last week in Exeter, Plymouth, Torbay and Truro nightclubs and will work towards keeping young people safe and free from harassment on their nights out.

An alarming new report reveals people in the South West are leaving major decisions about housing, assets and care to chance:

The report found that 82 per cent want loved ones to make decisions in the event of illness or accident but only 8% have created a lasting power of attorney (LPA) to enable this.
