Mike Haywood’s first half try, plus a penalty from Northampton fly-half JJ Hanrahan, proved sufficient enough reward for the Saints to see off Devon’s finest.

Man drowns trying to rescue dog from sea

A man has died after trying to rescue his dog from the sea on New Year's Day.

The emergency sevices were alerted to people in difficulty in the water off Portmellon near Mevagissey at around 11am.

Two people were subsequently recovered from the sea.

One was recovered by a member of the public and brought to shore, the second person was recovered from the sea by the Coastguard helicopter and was taken to hospital.

The RNLI Lifeboat from Fowey and Mevagissey Coastguard Rescue Team were also in attendance.

Appeal after serious hit and run in Devon

Between 0215 and 0227 hours on Friday 01st January 2016, there was a serious hit and run incident on the A380 KINGS ASH ROAD, PAIGNTON, DEVON.

What has been described as a Dark Green Ford Motorcar was travelling on the A380 from MARLDON WAY towards TWEENAWAY JUNCTION in southerly direction. Just prior to LUSCOMBE LANE, the Green car has collided with a male pedestrian who was walking with his family.

As a result of the collision, the male pedestrian received serious injuries and the Green car failed to stop at the scene.

64% of those with dementia feel isolated

New research by Alzheimer’s Society shows that 39% of people in the South West mistakenly think that once a person with dementia stops recognising loved ones, they don’t benefit that much from spending time with them.

In a separate survey of 300 people affected by dementia, the charity also found that 64% of those living with the condition felt isolated from friends and family following a diagnosis. Today, Alzheimer’s Society is calling on people to make a positive New Year’s resolution to spend time with people with dementia and help them take part in activities they enjoy to keep...

A Manchester author looking for fans who witnessed performances by The Beatles in Exeter has been overwhelmed by the response from Daily readers.

Richard Houghton called on the Daily to help him track down gig goers who saw any the Fab Four’s ABC shows in March 1963, October 1963 and October 1964 for a ‘people’s history’ of the group.

Quit Club for Tiverton smokers

SMOKERS in Tiverton who are thinking about giving up the habit in the New Year are being offered a helping hand with the opening of an NHS-led quit club.

The Tiverton Stop Smoking Club is free to join and will run for six weeks, starting on Tuesday 5 January.

The club will meet at Old Heathcoat School Community Centre in King Street from 6pm to 7pm each Tuesday until 9 February.

Rob Baxter has warned his high-flying Exeter Chiefs side to prepare for a backlash of sorts from Northampton Saints ahead of today's (FRI) New Year’s Day clash at Franklin’s Gardens (3pm).
