Cuts fears prompt former police chief to bid for PCC post

A former police chief is announcing today (Monday) that he will run for the office of Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner, over fears that government austerity measures are putting at risk the most vulnerable members of area’s population.

There are flood alerts for the River Axe, Lower Exe, Rivers Otter and Sid, Middle Exe, Clyst and Culm and River Teign and an amber warning remains in place for strong winds.

Update: 4pm:

Reports of an obstruction on the railway track between Exeter St Davids and Taunton currently is blocking the line.

A reduced hourly train service will run between Birmingham New Street and Plymouth.

Rydon Lane is blocked inbound near Russell Way due to a fallen tree, outbound only one lane is open. Motorists advised to find an alternative route.

Tributes paid to Joyce Cann, Dartmoor Folk Festival president

Tributes were paid to Joyce Cann, president of the Dartmoor Folk Festival and wife of the event founder, the late Bob Cann, at her funeral service held at St Andrew's Church in South Tawton.

Joyce was born in the parish of South Zeal, where she spent much of her life.

She was born Edna 'Joyce' Sampson on June 30, 1925 to Maria and William Sampson, one of three children, with an older sister called Dorothy, and a younger brother William.

Elderly man seriously injured in assault

Police are investigating after a 69-year-old man suffered serious head injuries in an unprovoked attack in Torquay.

The man was assaulted by another man on the pathway between Hele Road and Pendennis Road around 11.45pm on Saturday night [6 February].

The victim, from Torquay, was walking home when he was approached by the other man and repeatedly hit about the head.

He sustained multiple skull and facial fractures and was taken to Torbay Hospital.

Traffic signal maintenance in Exeter

Essential maintenance work is planned to start on traffic signals at the Magdalen Road/St Leonards Road/College Road Junction in Exeter on Monday 15 February.

Devon County Council will replace the signals, poles and electrics, which are at the end of their serviceable lives, and cable ducting will be replaced where required.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place while the work is carried out.

The scheme is expected to be completed on Wednesday 2 March.
