Concerns over rough sleepers in wheelie bins

As the cold weather is set to continue, many homeless people are putting themselves at risk of injury and even death by sleeping in waste containers, according to recycling specialists, Coastal Recycling.

Many rough sleepers are seeking shelter from the harsh weather conditions and see wheelie bins as a safer place to sleep than on the street. In addition, bins present a comfortable refuge to people under the influence of drink and drugs.

Unfortunately accidents can occur if the sleeper hasn’t been spotted in advance. Each bin is lifted six metres high before being tipped...

Head of CCF section Dr Geoff Chapman said it was an amazing opportunity for the whole school and CCF. “The visit of the Sea Kings was exciting enough, but being able to get 80 cadets airborne was an unprecedented opportunity which I am sure pupils will remember for a long time....

Exeter astronomer gets best ever view of aging star

An astronomer from the University of Exeter has had the sharpest ever view of a dusty disc around an aging star 4,000 light years away which could signal a new generation of planets.

Using an intensely powerful telescopic system at an observatory in Chile Dr Jacques Kluska, an associate research fellow in the department of Physics and Astronomy, and fellow scientists on a pan-European team, were able to get the clearest view so far of the star and compare discs around young and old stars for the first time.

They found that the discs looked surprisingly similar and now...

Go Kevin!

We’ve raised £890 on Just Giving! No, wait, add gift aid of £100 and that makes it £990 and still counting!

That’s a recent conversation at our house. Our good friend Ruth Regan died last year and her husband Kevin is taking part in Hospiscare’s sponsored Men’s Walk to thank Hospiscare for its “outstanding” support given to them both.

The donations and comments on Kevin’s JustGiving page are a wonderful testament to Ruth, Kevin and Hospiscare.

After being married for 47 years Kevin was understandably bewildered and confused by his new life alone, but the Men’s Walk...

Your size could make you poorer

Scientists at the University of Exeter have found the most robust evidence yet that simply being a shorter man or a more overweight woman leads to lower chances in life, including a lower income.

It has long been known that there is a link between height and weight and how well off a person is, in terms of socioeconomic factors including earnings, postcode, level of education and job type. People from poorer backgrounds are less likely to grow tall and more likely to put on weight, in part because of a poorer education and nutrition in childhood and early adulthood. Now, in...
