Crowds flock to second day of County Show

Ideal show-going weather, great crowds and excellent competitions combined to make the second day of the Devon County Show at Westpoint, Exeter a great celebration of rural life.

Show Secretary Ollie Allen said it was wonderful to see the county turn out in force for the 121st Show: “The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and everyone seems so happy to be enjoying the start of summer here at the show ground.”

The crowds have enjoyed exceptional local food and drink and lots of entertainment in the avenues with Titan the comic robot, bands and dancers.

Take That will make a brief appearance at Radio 1's Big Weekend at Powderham.

Gary Barlow made the announcement this morning on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show today.

The band will be joining Sigma on stage on main stage on the Saturday.

The two acts have collaborated on a new single.

Cry' sees Sigma meld Take That's vocals with some soaring synths and a gospel choir.

Pedestrian killed by lorry on A38

Motorists were facing severe delays this lunchtime after a pedestrian was killed on the A38.

Emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal collision at South Brent.

The collision between a male pedestrian and a DAF HGV happened on the northbound carriageway near to the Shell Carew garage around 11am today [20 May].

The male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. It has been reported that he stepped out in front of the garden.

The A38 is currently closed at Ivybridge and diversions are in place.

More than 160 women in business attended this year’s record-breaking Venus Awards launch at Plymouth Science Park this week.

The Awards celebrate the vital contribution that women in business make to the regional and national economy. In Devon this year, nominees and applicants will be competing in up to 14 categories, including two that are voted for by the general public.

Exeter start up hits fundraising target in 24 hours!

A University of Exeter graduate has exceeded his fundraising target of £10,000 in just over 24 hours to contribute to a graduate business start-up project that could revolutionise language learning for children.

Sexual conflict between males and females can lead to changes in the shape of their genitals, according to research on burying beetles by scientists at the University of Exeter.

The study, published today in the journal Evolution, provides new evidence that conflict over how often mating takes place can lead to males evolving longer penis-like organs and females larger ‘claws’ on their genitalia, within ten generations.

At her first meeting with all the PCCs and Chief Constables across the south west region, Devon and Cornwall’s Alison Hernandez committed to a major investment to ensure the effective implementation of the new Emergency Services Mobile Communication Platform (ESMCP)l.

Thundering-hooved Shetland ponies, motorcycle acrobatics and the giant Devon Eye swung the county’s largest annual event into thrilling action.
