Employment problems still rising

Leading local advice charity Citizens Advice Exeter, has today released its advice trend statistics for the period 1 April – 31st December 2017.

The charity has helped 7448 people directly with advice and information since 1 April. The overall advice trends, compared to the same period in the previous year, were as follows:

Employment

Overall, the charity saw a 4.8% increase in employment enquiries. The main changes being:

• 26.3% increase about pay and entitlements • 14.8% increase about employment tribunals and appeals • 37.0% reduction about terms...

RD&E Hospital to change visiting hours

Visiting friends and relatives in hospital at the Royal Devon and Exeter is set to become easier as the Trust opens up its visiting hours.

From Monday 5 February 2018, patient visiting will be open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.

The public are currently only able to visit patients on general wards at set times in the afternoon and early evening.

The move to more flexible hours comes in a bid to make visiting patients in hospital easier and more accessible for friends, relatives and carers, who will be able to choose to visit at a time that is most convenient....

South West sees increase in 2017 profit warnings

Listed companies in the South West issued a total of 21 profit warnings in 2017, up from 18 in 2016. The final quarter of 2017 saw five profit warnings, compared to six in the same quarter of 2016, according to EY’s latest Profit Warnings report. FTSE and AIM-listed support services and travel & leisure companies in the South West issued the most warnings with six each in 2017. Across the UK, the total number of profit warnings in 2017 (276) was comparable with 2016 when 283 warnings were issued. The UK saw 81 profit warnings in Q4 2017 – 11% higher than the same quarter of 2016....

Exeter Deaf Academy Children’s Home graded ‘Good’ again by Ofsted

Following a thorough two-day inspection of our children’s home, ‘Progress House’ has been graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted.


The Ofsted report praises the staff and is positive about the future of our three-bed home which provides specialist 52-week residential care, 24 hours a day, for Deaf young people.


Registered Care Home Manager James Heaver leads the Care Team, who includes Deputy Manager Vicky Coombs and nine Residential Support Workers (RSWs) who are all trained in Deaf awareness and qualified in British Sign Language (BSL) up to Level 3.

Work to repair footpaths along Pinhoe Road to start next week

Footpaths along Pinhoe Road in Exeter are due to be repaired, starting from next week (Monday 5 February).

The existing paving slabs, between St Johns Road and St Marks Avenue, are being replaced with a bitumen surface over the next six weeks.

Temporary traffic lights will be used outside of peak travel times (9:30am – 3:30pm). On-street parking review in Sidmouth

Devon County Council is planning to carry out a review of on-street parking in Sidmouth.

The authority will be examining whether people in the town feel residents’ parking permits are needed in some roads.

The review will focus on parking in areas near the town centre where residents typically do not have off-street parking and may experience displacement of vehicles used by shoppers and commuters, making parking near their homes difficult.

Devon is renowned for having beautiful wildlife-rich landscapes and habitats. Less well known is the huge number of rare species which Devon supports, including some such as the horrid ground-weaver spider which are found nowhere else on the planet.
