Superfast broadband public consultation launched

A public consultation has been launched by Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) ahead of undertaking a fresh procurement to find contractors to provide superfast broadband. CDS, which is responsible for rolling out broadband across the two counties, is establishing the remaining area where there are no current or credible future plans to deliver Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband infrastructure capable of download speeds of at least 30Mbps. Smiles all round as Cllr Geoff Pook, East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) portfolio holder for Asset Management and Ward Member for Beer and Branscombe, cuts the ribbon at the Beer Men’s Shed which will help the mental health and isolation of men in the village and its surrounding area.

Smithers Purslow acquires Byrom Clark Roberts

Exeter-based consulting engineering and surveying firm, Smithers Purslow (SP), has acquired its northern and Wales-based counterpart, Byrom Clark Roberts (BCR), increasing staff numbers to over 100 working from 10 locations across the UK.

Five employees based at SP’s office in the Basepoint Business Centre, Yeoford Way, will now work alongside colleagues in Chester, Glaston, Leeds, Llandudno, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Reading.

Work starts on region’s new broadband network

Jurassic Fibre today announced that construction of its ultrafast fibre-to-the-premises network has begun, following the granting of Code Powers by OFCOM.

The first premises will be connected in late November, when the company starts its friendly user trial in the area between Exeter Airport, Clyst St Mary and Sowton Industrial Estate.

A small shop in Exeter that sells candles made from recycled wax has been named as a runner-up in the search to find Britain's Best Small Shop of 2019.

Exeter builders merchant's tool appeal recognised in national awards

RGB Building Supplies has been shortlisted in the prestigious Builders' Merchants Awards for the Tools for Africa appeal it ran with Devon-based charity Amigos.

The appeal invited the local community to donate preloved tools, which Amigos arranged to be repaired and shipped to Africa. The tools will be used to provide vocational training to young people so they can help lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
