Active acne refers to the presence of pimples and lesions on the skin. It’s a very common skin condition that many will have or have had at some point in their lives.

Living with active acne can be difficult, as the painful lesions and spots can become painful. As well as the unpleasant physical symptoms, the mental symptoms can be just as bad too. Many acne sufferers experience low self esteem and a drop in confidence due to the uncomfortable nature of the skin disorder.

There are several ways to manage acne, these include: laser treatments (like those offered by The Laser Treatment Clinic), home-made remedies, over the counter treatment, and a change in diet.

One of the best ways to manage acne is to prevent it from the inside out. Your diet can have a big impact in preventing and managing active acne. Studies have found that following a low glycemic diet can play a role in preventing and managing acne.

The following is a list of the foods and vitamins you may want to be consuming if you suffer from active acne.

Fatty Fish Such as Salmon

Fatty fish including salmon are rich in omega 3. Omega 3 is a type of fat that has been known to reduce inflammation in the body. Foods rich in omega 3 include fish, eggs, nuts, and seafood such as oysters.

Try adding fish into your diet, maybe start implementing it as a weekly addition first and then build up to the point where you’re consuming a good amount of omega 3. This could help improve your acne by reducing inflammation and in turn, prevent acne flare ups.

Foods Rich in Zinc is Known to Help Acne

Studies have suggested that eating foods high in zinc could help reduce and prevent active acne. This may be because zinc is a known anti-inflammatory meaning it can help prevent acne by stopping inflammation which causes painful breakouts. Foods rich in zinc could help you prevent and improve your acne due to these anti-inflammatory healing properties.

Zinc rich foods include:

  • Oysters
  • Tofu
  • Beef
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Nuts such as cashews
  • Lentils
  • Yoghurt

Try to incorporate these foods into your diet over the next few weeks and see if there is any improvement to your acne. Anti-inflammatory food is a great thing to implement into your diet when you suffer from active acne as it can stop the inflammatory response that causes flare ups.

Fruits and Vegetables

It’ll come to no surprise that eating a healthy amount of fruit and vegetables can help reduce and prevent active acne. Fruits and vegetables are rich in many nutrients and minerals that contain anti-inflammatory properties.

Blueberries are a great example of this as they are rich in antioxidants and fibre. Blueberries are said to reduce the inflammation from acne, making them a great fruit to add to your diet.

In summary, eating the right foods isn’t the cure for acne, although it may help with breakouts, flare ups and painful symptoms. Try incorporating some of the above suggestions into your diet along with any advice your doctor has given you too.

Hopefully with the right diet and treatment, your active acne will be well controlled and reduced.
