From happiness and excitement to stress and worry, you will experience a jumble of emotions when you bring a new dog or puppy home. You probably can’t wait to play with your little furry friend, but you first need to make sure you’re fully prepared to care for them. To make this a smooth transition for both you and your pup, it’s best to gather all the supplies you might need ahead of time.

So, besides the dog food, a big bag of treats for your fur baby, and a set of stainless steel food and water bowls, here is a list of dog products you might want to add to your shopping list. While you may not use all of these items right off the bat, having them on hand will help make the first couple of weeks a joy instead of a total disaster.

1- Collar and ID Tags

First things first, your furry bundle of joy will need at least one collar and ID tag. If you adopt a pup from a shelter, they will probably give you a collar. But, you might want to get a new one that fits your dog perfectly with room for growth. Make sure it has a durable, quick-release clamp, an extra lip for the dog tags, and a sturdy ring where you can attach the leash. Now, the ID tags are essential, even if your pup is microchipped. Personalize them with their name and your contact information. Your canine friend should wear them at all items, even if they are wearing a harness.

2- A Long, Sturdy Leash

You’ll need a sturdy leash to keep your pup at just the right distance from you outdoors. A regular, six-foot leash should do just fine. Look for one made of heavy-duty material like nylon, and steer clear from retractable leashes. The retractable kinds don’t allow you to have proper control over your furball, especially when pulled out longer than six feet, so you’re better off with a regular, durable leash.

3- A Well-fitted Harness

A harness, along with your six-foot leash, will help you keep your pup under control on walks, hikes, park visits, and anywhere else you might take them. Unlike a collar, which puts a lot of pressure on your fur baby’s neck, a harness gently hugs their chest, allowing you to keep them from pulling on the leash without choking them or causing them pain. Make sure the one you pick fits your canine companion just right but is also adjustable with room to grow.

4- A Comfortable Muzzle

No one likes to confine their fur baby, but there are many situations where a muzzle can come in handy. For example, you might need one when introducing your pup to children for the first time, just to be extra safe. You could also use it to keep your dog from biting in an emergency situation where they are scared or in pain. Choosing the right muzzle for your dog can be tricky, though, because not all muzzles are created equal. Look for a basket-style one with an adjustable strap to ensure your dog’s comfort and safety.

5- Quality Brushes and Grooming Tools

Many pet parents are concerned with their dogs’ nutrition and health but often overlook their dental health. Canine dental hygiene is vital for their overall wellbeing. For that reason, you might want to invest in a toothbrush from them, in addition to dog toothpaste. You’ll also need a quality brush for your four-legged companion’s hair, one that suits their coat. Regular brushing will help you control the shedding and keep your furry friend’s hair clean and tangle-free. It’s a good idea to get a pair of nail clippers, as well.

6- Pet Gates

A pet gate will ensure that your little furball doesn’t sneak into a room where they could wreak havoc on your furniture or get themself hurt. You will find a wide range of designs and dimensions to choose from. In other words, you can get the perfect gate that keeps your dog from getting in trouble without reducing the aesthetic appeal of your interior.

Canines bring pure joy into our lives, so as a proud canine parent, the least you can do is make sure your fur baby has everything they need to grow into a happy and healthy dog. With these items on hand, you will be more than ready to handle the surprises and challenges of dog ownership. A word to the wise: if you’re bringing home a puppy or an untrained dog, you might want to invest in a properly-sized crate and some potty pads, as well. Now, you can relax and enjoy every moment with your new furry companion.
