An exciting and innovative new dementia service has just been launched for the local community of Teignmouth. The Ness Shed is built on the researched and well-known concept of the ‘Men’s Shed’ and, using the expertise of trained professionals, creates a unique environment for individuals with dementia to take part in manual and creative activities.

The launch event, which took place on 23rd May, was attended by many local residents, care professionals and the mayor of Teignmouth, who announced the official opening of The Ness Shed with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the centre.

This was followed by a presentation from founder of The Ness Shed, Jonathan Hanbury, explaining the benefits that the new service will provide for individuals who decide to join.

The practical, custom-designed space can enable those individuals even with advanced dementia to benefit from the space, providing them with the opportunity to take part in activities such as woodwork, clay therapy and pottery in a familiar environment, with the support of professionally trained enablers.

“Early intervention can have a massive impact on the speed of deterioration when an individual is diagnosed with dementia. The Ness Shed uses techniques to improve members’ confidence, social skills and will keep them active. We are very excited to see how our latest service will impact peoples’ lives.” - Jonathan Hanbury

The specialist classes are now up and running and available to both members and non-members to book onto. Classes run 4 times a week with each session lasting around 2 hours long.

The Ness Shed has been set up alongside The Ness Dementia Centre which was established in 2017 and offers support, information, home enablement and day care.
