A yellow severe weather warning for strong wind has been issued for Devon on Saturday, with gusts of up to 55mph expected in areas.

A spell of unseasonably strong southwesterly winds, accompanied by heavy, blustery showers, is expected to develop across the south of the UK later on Friday but peaking during Saturday daytime.

The strongest winds will lead to large waves round exposed coastlines.

Gusts of up to 45 mph inland, and 45 to 55 mph along exposed coastlines, are expected.

The strong gusts may cause disruption to transport and, in view of the time of the year, there is increased potential for disruption to holidaymakers and outdoor activities.

The Met Office’s chief forecaster said: “An area of low pressure currently forming over the mid-Atlantic is expected to intensify into an unseasonably intense feature as it tracks towards the south west of the British Isles.

“Strengthening winds on its southern flank are likely to move into southwestern areas on Friday, but the peak in wind strength will be across southwest England and south Wales at first on Saturday, spreading along the south coast of England through the course of the day.”

The five day regional forecast for Devon is as follows:

Today:
Most places will stay sunny, warm and dry again for much of the day. Cloud will increase in Cornwall and Devon during the afternoon, with some showery rain arriving late in the day. Maximum Temperature 24 °C.

Tonight:
Locally heavy rain in Devon and Cornwall will spread into Somerset and Dorset overnight but eastern parts of the region will stay dry, mild and cloudy. Minimum Temperature 14 °C.

Thursday:
After a rather cloudy start with some residual rain, most places will become dry with sunny spells, though a few showers will develop in the afternoon. Maximum Temperature 23 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:
Wet weather will sweep in early on Friday. Saturday will see blustery, and perhaps thundery showers. Some sunshine is likely on Sunday, but wind and rain will arrive later.
