On Friday 29 November, between 11am and 3pm, Devon born author Jani Tully Chaplin will be promoting her Manor House Stories in the heart of Widecombe-in-the-Moor.

Jani will be reading Lady Davina Dove ‘A Christmas Story’ to local children in the idyllic setting of Sexton’s Cottage, now a National Trust shop. This is the first in Jani’s twelve book series to be released; and everyone is welcome to come along, meet Jani and pick up a signed copy.

The stories were written by Jani some 25 years ago for her children when she was living in Devon. They remained undiscovered until a chance meeting with a publisher in Corfu in 2011. Since then, many wonderful illustrations have been added and the series of twelve stories finally brought back to life.

The Manor House Stories follow the adventures of a rather unusual family and their servants. From the lowliest scullery maid up through the ranks of the household to the head of the family, each member has an important role to play looking after the Manor House. What makes the stories extra special is that all the characters in them are birds.

Jani said: "In the gardens, the village and on the farm, the birds and animals work together, in harmony with nature, to preserve the traditions and idyllic way of life that have disappeared long ago. From time to time surprising visitors arrive at the House; from a Princess to a Pirate, you never know who may appear to cast their magic and mischief over the Manor House."

Pam Thomas, National Trust Retail Manager, said: "It is fabulous to have Jani at Sexton’s Cottage. The books are delightful and it will be lovely for local families to come and meet her."

Jani will also be asking the children to join in a colouring in competition. Children can either colour in the sheets or take them away and return them to the shop. Jani will then select a winner who will receive a signed copy of her next book as a prize.

If you wish to bring a group of children to meet Jani, please book in advance by telephoning: 01364 621321.

Individual family groups can come when they like throughout the day.
