Church of England says no to female bishops

The Church of England's governing body on Tuesday narrowly blocked a move to permit women to serve as bishops, leaving the church facing more years of contentious debate.

Following a day-long debate, opponents mustered enough support to deny the necessary two-thirds majority among lay members of the General Synod.

The defeat was a setback for Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, who retires at the end of December, and his successor, Bishop Justin Welby. Both had strongly endorsed a proposed compromise that they had hoped would end decades of debate....

BRUSSELS (AP) — Goodbye Britain? For the European Union, a once-unthinkable question is looking more like a real possibility with each new grinding week of economic crisis. If ever Britain had a nightmare, that's it.

The British public shows no interest in moving closer to the rest of Europe, and most can't even seem to stomach...

One teenager made offensive comments about a murdered child on Twitter. Another young man wrote on Facebook that British soldiers should "go to hell." A third posted a picture of a burning paper poppy, symbol of remembrance of war dead.

All were arrested, two convicted, and one jailed — and they're not the only ones. In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted each year for posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene, and the number is growing as our online lives expand.

Lawyers say the mounting tally shows the problems of a legal...

LONDON (AP) — Inflation in Britain rose by more than anticipated in October, largely on the back of higher university fees.

The Office for National Statistics also said Tuesday that higher prices for clothing, shoes, food and non-alcoholic beverages were also factors behind the increase in the headline annual inflation rate to 2.7 percent from 2.2 percent in September.

The markets were anticipating a more modest rise to 2.4 percent.

The government's official target is to keep consumer price inflation at or near 2 percent. The October rate was the highest since May,...
