More farmers battle TB as new figures show 3,000 cows are culled in one month

The number of cattle slaughtered because of TB has risen again this month bringing the total number of cattle culled to 186,664 (from January 2008 – Jan 2013 in Great Britain). In the latest up-to-date figures released on 17 April by Defra, 3,215 cattle were slaughtered across Great Britain in January, meaning a 24.2 per cent increase on the same time last year, and the month-on-month figures also show a jump. OFT launches market study into providers of quick, discounted house sales

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is today (18 April) launching a study into the 'quick house sale' market and is calling for people who have used, or considered using, these businesses to contact the OFT about their experiences.

Quick house sale providers offer to buy a house or find a third party buyer very quickly, usually at a discount from the full market value. While providers may offer a valuable service, the OFT is concerned that some practices might lead to homeowners receiving much less for their property than it is worth. Thousands turn out for the funeral of Baroness Thatcher

A gun carriage bearing Baroness Thatcher's coffin made its way to from the Houses of Parliament to St Paul's Cathedral this morning in a ceremonial procession to her funeral. Proper investigation needed after pollution says RSPCA

The RSPCA are calling for an investigation after a pollution spill harmed hundreds of seabirds for the second time in just two months.

More than 170 birds, mainly guillemots, were taken to the charity’s West Hatch wildlife centre in Taunton, Somerset, last week after being found washed up along the south coastline covered in a sticky substance. RSPCA inspectors rescued as many of the birds as they could, but unfortunately many more were found on the beaches already dead.

A 24-year-old man from Braddons Hill Road East, Torquay, is due to appear before Magistrates in Torquay this morning following an incident involving an imitation firearm. Mark Cook was arrested at lunchtime on Monday 15 April 2013 after a Police Community Support Officer was hit by a ball bearing fired from a gun. Officers attended an address in the road and made the arrest a short time later. The suspect was then interviewed before being charged with being in possession of a BB gun and kept in custody pending his court appearance this morning (Tuesday 16 April 2013).

Dog owners asked to keep their animals under control after a sheep attack

Police in South Devon are reminding dog owners of the need to keep their animals under control following an attack on sheep in the Bala Brook area of South Brent in February 2013. Police enquiries have yet to identify the white Jack Russell and a small brown Poodle/Terrier type dog that were chased off during the incident on 7 February. The sheep suffered minor injuries. Free childcare available to some toddlers who turn two this month

Parents of toddlers turning two this April are being encouraged by the Deputy Prime Minister to check if they can get free childcare.

From this September, 15 hours of free childcare a week are being made available to around 130,000 two-year-olds from lower income backgrounds across England. The first of these eligible toddlers will have their second birthdays this month.

Local authority figures show that 9,900 children in the South West will be eligible this September.

Police in Newquay are appealing for information to trace a man sought in connection with an assault. Police are seeking to locate and arrest Frazer Rogers aged 28 years, in connection with an alleged assault which occurred in Newquay on Friday 5 April. All enquiries to date have failed to locate him. Rogers is described as a white man, 5’11” in height, slim build, with short straight brown hair. He is known to frequent both Newquay and Truro. Police continue search for missing Meryl Cameron

Police are continuing to search for Meryl Cameron, missing from her home in Canonstown near Hayle.

She has not been seen for nearly two weeks and her car, a distinctive white soft top Renault Megan, registration number WK62 YMC, was found at Hells Mouth on the B3301 on the morning of Saturday 30th March.

Police are trying to establish her movements particularly from Thursday 28 March through Good Friday and are keen to speak to anyone who saw her or her vehicle during this time period.
