Commons votes in favour of gay marriage

The House of Commons has voted in favour of allowing gay marriage in England and Wales after the third reading of the bill today (21 May).

The latest two day debate over the controversial bill witnessed a number of passionate speeches for and against as well as several failed amendments.

Social media plagued by privacy problems, say researchers in June issue of 'Computer' magazine

The privacy management of 16 popular social networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter, is “seriously deficient,” according to a study being published in the June issue of Computer magazine.

Equality South West calls on South West MPs to back same-sex marriage

Equality South West (ESW) is calling on MPs in the region to back same-sex marriage when the issue returns to the House of Commons today. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was approved in February, but an amendment has now been tabled that would enable heterosexual couples to enter into civil partnerships. This has been labelled a ‘wrecking amendment’ by Maria Miller, the Equalities minister, but supporters see it as an important final measure to ensure real equality for couples regardless of sexual orientation. John Lewis signs Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh

John Lewis has announced that it has signed the multi-stakeholder Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, coordinated by the UN's International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Rising numbers of over 60s facing homelessness

Rising numbers of older people are facing homelessness according to a national debt charity. StepChange Debt Charity has seen a marked rise in the numbers of people aged 60 and over seeking its help with rent and mortgage arrears, while the amounts they owe are increasing too. Large numbers of older people seek help from the charity with their debts each year, usually with high levels of debt on credit cards and overdrafts but lower levels of housing debt arrears. Hundreds protest Pakistan's election results in London

Hundreds of students and members of the Pakistani community gathered on Monday outside the embassy in London to protest against the recent vote in Pakistan, which they say was rigged.

Last Saturday's election saw the victory of Nawaz Sharif, the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Sharif denied allegations of rigging and asked Imran Khan, former national cricket captain and leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI), to "show the sportsman's spirit" and to accept his defeat.

Summercourt bus station fire could have been deliberate

Following investigations, it is now thought that yesterday morning's fire at the Summercourt area of Cornwall near Newquay may have been started deliberately.

A large number of buses were completely deystroyed by the fire, which is having an impact on the bus service provided in mid-Cornwall however Western Greyhound say they are doing everything they can to prevent disruption to vital services such as school buses. 35 buses were reported to have been destroyed in the fire, however, no people were injured.

Record number of children safeguarded by CEOP

A record number of children have been safeguarded from sexual abusers in the past year, figures from the UK’s leading child protection agency reveal today. In 2012/2013, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre safeguarded and protected 790 children – an increase of 85 per cent on the previous year, and the highest yearly figure since the Centre launched in 2006. It now brings the total number of protected children to 2,255 in its seven-year history. NGOs and shipping industry make joint call for review of legal discharge status of PIB

The number of seabirds recorded washed up on beaches in two incidents along the English Channel covered in polyisobutene (PIB) has passed 4,000.

Now, leading wildlife conservation and animal welfare charities and the UK Chamber of Shipping, supported by the wider industry body MaritimeUK, have come together as a single voice to call for an urgent review of the hazard classification status of PIB.

Fire in Newquay destroys a third of Western Greyhound's bus fleet

Devon & Cornwall Police say that they received a call at 1.17am this morning (3 May 2013) reporting that a number of buses were on fire in the Summercourt area of Cornwall. It is thought that at least 37 buses have been deystroyed by fire, a third of bus firm Western Greyhound's fleet, which will impact on the bus service provided in mid-Cornwall.
