We learned with deep shock and great sadness of the murder of a young member of the armed forces in Woolwich yesterday afternoon. Such acts of violence and terror have no place in our society. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family.

The attackers linked their actions with the religion of Islam. Statements from major national Muslim bodies have, in the ensuing hours, condemned the act in the strongest terms and stressed its lack of connection to – and complete contradiction of – teachings of Islam. Even so, there have been attacks on two mosques over the course of the...

The latest two day debate over the controversial bill witnessed a number of passionate speeches for and against as well as several failed amendments.

The issue has added to the considerable tensions between David Cameron and many grass roots activists and backbench MPs who, stirred by the debate over Europe, have been further angered by their leader's support for marriage equality between gay and straight couples.

With support...

Social media plagued by privacy problems, say researchers in June issue of 'Computer' magazine

The privacy management of 16 popular social networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter, is “seriously deficient,” according to a study being published in the June issue of Computer magazine.

Researchers from UK-based Security Lancaster , an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research at Lancaster University, found a disconnect between privacy statements and the site’s actual privacy controls.

“Although social networking sites continue to attract millions of diverse users worldwide, they remain plagued by privacy compromises that breed user dissatisfaction...

Equality South West calls on South West MPs to back same-sex marriage

Equality South West (ESW) is calling on MPs in the region to back same-sex marriage when the issue returns to the House of Commons today. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was approved in February, but an amendment has now been tabled that would enable heterosexual couples to enter into civil partnerships. This has been labelled a ‘wrecking amendment’ by Maria Miller, the Equalities minister, but supporters see it as an important final measure to ensure real equality for couples regardless of sexual orientation. Brenda Weston from ESW said: "There are 28 times more LGBT people in the UK...
