Green clouds appear over Salford

On Monday afternoon a mysterious green gas cloud appeared in Cadishead, Salford, prompting passers-by to become quite concerned.

Manchester Fire Service confirmed that crews from Irlam and Eccles fire stations were called to a waste disposal site in Cadishead at 1.53pm on Monday, 15th October, following several sightings of a green smoke cloud, which were reported to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's (GMFRS) control room.

The blaze was quickly extinguished by staff at Lanstar in Liverpool Road who used soda ash to neutralise the chemicals.

Firefighters worked with staff and an onsite chemist to ensure the site was safe.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: "It was a fire involving a drum shredding machine which was the result of an exothermic reaction. The onsite staff had managed to put out the fire using soda ash...The green tinge in the smoke was the result of phosphorus which the onsite chemist said was nothing more than normal smoke and not harmful to the public."
