Landlords urged to act on new laws

Landlords in Devon and Somerset are being urged to act now to ensure they are ready for new safety laws aimed at saving dozens of lives a year.

The regulations make it compulsory for all landlords to fit smoke alarms in rented homes and are expected to come into effect from October 2015, subject to Parliamentary approval.

The University of Exeter has been ranked as one of the top 10 UK universities in the influential Guardian University Guide 2016.

Exeter is now in the top 10 of all the main UK higher education league tables – the first time such an accolade has been achieved - as well as being ranked in the top one per cent of institutions globally.

PETA's first-ever Student Award has been delivered to the University of Exeter's Animal Welfare Society in recognition of the student advocacy group's outstanding work in bringing to light the suffering of nearly 30,000 animals – 17,000 of whom are currently housed on campus – imprisoned and experimented on by the university over a seven-year period.

The Maynard School choir is one of 20 schools in England and Wales to have been selected to be part of the ceremonies that will officially welcome the teams to Rugby World Cup 2015.

An Exeter College student has been busy organising events to raise funds to support a project that tackles poverty in South Africa.

Berenice Phillips, 18, will travel to South Africa in June this year to work on the development programme for 10 weeks.
