Parents in Exeter rally against the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill

Defending alternative education and parental rights

Parents rally against the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill: Defending alternative education and parental rights #ChildrensWellbeingBill Parents are set to gather on 8th March 2025 in Bedford Street, Exeter (and major cities across England, including London, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham). This coordinated rally aims to protest the proposed bill. This deeply concerning piece of legislation threatens educational freedoms and prioritises data collection over children's actual well-being.

The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill (CWSB) is being presented as a...

If you’re not a football fan, that doesn’t matter. Keep reading.

Exeter City faced Crawley Town on Saturday in a tense game that Exeter looked to be winning 2 – 1 until the final minutes of play when Crawley managed to squeeze in an extra goal, leaving players and fans devastated at the 2 – 2 draw. Theoretically, Exeter should have won. However, from the perspective of the live crowd it was clear that Crawley deserved their equaliser; it was a miracle they hadn’t scored their second goal earlier.

Football fan or not, a trip to St James’ Park is essential for any student...

Carnegie Medal winning author, Tim Bowler, visited Exeter School on Wednesday 4 November to deliver creative writing workshops to all Lower Fifth classes.

Tim is renowned for his psychological thrillers for young adults and he challenged pupils to consider an imaginary place in which something reasonably believable, yet strange or unexpected, happens.

Using this method, which he sometimes employs in his own work, some amazing and wonderful stories were rapidly emerging. Pupils volunteered to read out their work, which proved to be imaginative and often enticing, and were...

Flashback to a month ago when my boyfriend Patrick convinced me to head down to the Exeter fan zone and immerse myself in the Rugby World Cup. Now, four weeks on, I’ve watched Ireland beat France and lose to Argentina, seen Wales lose to South Africa and Argentina lose to Australia and, finally, New Zealand win the world cup.

Brought up a Birmingham City FC supporter with no knowledge of rugby, I’ve seen my whole outlook on the sport change under 2015’s world cup – for the better I must add.

That’s why Patrick and I headed down to Sandy Park to watch the Exeter Chiefs play...

First Briton in space wows Exeter students

Students from a number of schools in the Exeter area were treated to an extremely rare talk when Dr. Helen Sharman OBE, the first Briton in space, delivered a fascinating lecture at the city’s Belmont Chapel on Tuesday 3 November.

The British astronaut who was working for Mars confectionary, on the team who launched Mars Ice Cream, was travelling home from work one evening when she heard an advert on the radio calling out for wannabe astronauts. After a gruelling selection process, Sharman was chosen from 13,000 applicants and sent to Star City in Russia for 18 months of highly...

A welcoming lady who works in Hyde + Seek was telling me about how very few students find the quirky little shop during their first year of university as it is tucked away off the main high street. As she was saying this I realised – that’s exactly me. Now in my second year, I have only just discovered what I am sure will become one of my favourite shops in Exeter.

Hyde + Seek is the ultimate gift shop – I challenge anyone to find a better place in Exeter to buy your friends and family their birthday and Christmas presents. For £7.95 you can buy a book with a seemingly endless...

One of the most brilliant things about Exeter is its openness to vegetarians and vegans. Now, I’m not saying it’s completely open and there are no harsh judgements, however in comparison to some of the other cities in the UK that I’ve visited, Exeter is far from the worst.

In fact, there’s a lovely little vegetarian and vegan café in the Cathedral yard called The Plant Café. I visited there once before for a chai latte and a slice of carrot cake but was keen to return and try the famous vegan chocolate cake. I should make this clear now, I’m a vegetarian, not vegan, yet was eager...

University lecturers never seem to stop talking about the RAMM and for everyone’s first term of university, it’s commonly mistaken for the Ram pub on campus (not quite the same thing). Although both Ram(m)s are claimed to be great, this week I decided to get a little cultural and check out the Royal Albert Memorial Museum.

Having done practically no research, I had no idea what to expect – not being a huge fan of museums, this made the day a little more exciting. All I knew was it stayed open Tuesday – Sunday for free to the public. Fantastic. It’s far more enticing to go to a...

Australian study shows gifted girls are more likely to suffer from exam stress

Exams are a stressful time for anyone, not least younger students. The pressure on youngsters to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace is phenomenal and many kids suffer enormously during exam periods. You might expect girls and boys to be equally affected by exam stress but, interestingly, it’s the girls who suffer the most.

Australian Research Results

Research carried out by academics in New South Wales found that gifted female Year 12 students striving for the highest marks in the end of High School exams tended to suffer the highest levels of stress and anxiety....

The Charity Fashion Show on 8 October at The Maynard School been hailed a sensational success, raising nearly £1000 for the education charity, Plan UK.

Organised by Sixth Form student, Lucie Rising, from its conception to completion, the show boasted a distinctly French theme to celebrate the close of Paris Fashion Week the previous day.

“I love French fashion and wanted the Show to be chic and classy but it was important to find a theme that all our students could relate to,” explained Lucie. “Girls could enter their own designs into four different categories but they didn...
