It is often said that your university years are some of the best years of your life, and it’s easy to see why. You can come and go as you please - there are no parents around to tell you what to do and when to do it.

While many argue that university is simply an opportunity for teeangers to party and have fun with new friends, alongside their learning of course, it actually has the potential to be far more than that. What a student makes of their time on-campus is their choice.

It’s important to understand that there are a number of ways that this experience and this time can be enhanced to place you in a better position once you graduate.

Keen to make the most of your university experience?

Have a read of the the advice below.

Be proactive about your learning

At university, you have a far greater opportunity to impact how you learn, than in any other learning environment. You can either sit in lectures and chat with your friends, half paying attention to what’s being said, or you can take a proactive approach to your learning and focus on the material at hand. Reading is also a vital part of thriving in a university environment. If you want to achieve your academic goals, you need to take reading seriously.

If you want to give yourself the best chance of success after university, then you need to be passionate about your learning. By taking your learning seriously, you can ensure that you graduate not only with good grades, but also with knowledge and understanding of the industry in which you plan on going into.

Focus on building a number of key skills

Your time at university isn’t just about what you learn in lectures, it’s also about enhancing other key life skills.

These three or four years are probably the only time in which you will have the freedom to readily try out new things, from joining societies and learning new sports to taking the time to book driving lessons at Surepass Driving School. Your university time is your chance to enhance your life skills, so that when you leave university, you not only have a degree but also a number of transferable skills that will make adapting to adult life that little bit easier.

Take care of yourself

A wide number of university students fail to take care of themselves, both mentally and physically. While this may not have an impact at first, eventually a lack of self-care will catch up with you. This is why it’s so vital that you not only know how to take care of yourself, but also that you actually practice doing so.

As a rule of thumb, sleep well, exercise regularly and eat clean whenever you can. On top of doing these things, think about your mental health, and consider doing one thing every day that will keep your emotional wellbeing balanced, like trying a new activity and eating well.
