Aspirational engineers from Exeter School are celebrating winning three prizes at the South West Regional Finals of the F1 in Schools Competition with one team making it into the National Final at Silverstone.

Exeter School entered three teams into the regional heat held at South Devon University Technical College.

The F1 in Schools aerodynamic competition challenges pupils to CAD design and make a CO2 powered vehicle using CNC milling and 3D printing. The racing car must adhere to strict regulations and complete the 20-metre course as fast as possible.

Seven months of preparation were put into good use as the Development Class was narrowly won by Team Ignis who qualified for the National Finals at Silverstone in April.

Team Neptune, also competing in the Development Class, won the "Best Engineered Car" prize and took second place.

Team Dynamic Motion won the "Judges' Recommendation" prize with the fastest time of 1.2 seconds over the 20-metre course, and reaction times of under 0.2 seconds.

Year 10 Toby Bower of Ignis said his teachers had been helpful and supplied them with the necessary materials and machinery needed to produce their car.

"In addition, they gave us lots of useful advice about designing the car and what we needed to win," he said. "We hope to use what we have learnt from this project to help us with future jobs in finance and engineering."

The teams would like to thank their sponsors for their generous support of this venture.

Dynamic Motion: Armstrong Valuation, Chillingford Farm and the Hills Family

Ignis: Marlin Cars (Crediton), Mercedes-Benz Exeter, and M.C. Kelly (Crediton).

Neptune: Clear Property (Exeter) and C3IA Solutions (Poole).

Well done to them all, and many thanks to their advisers, Mr Rose and Dr Rowland.
