Lavelle’s Silver Thorn too strong in Exeter feature

The Emma Lavelle-trained Silver Thorn won the feature Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, making virtually all the running to score by two lengths from co-favourite El Granjero at Exeter yesterday, where the sun shone on a beautiful day at Haldon Hill.

The grey had won his previous start at Doncaster in December, with his trainer reporting that he was progressing well. Lavelle said: “He’s still learning and he only ever really does as much as he needs to, which is great as he’ll keep improving. We’re very pleased with how he’s handled the ground today, which means he’ll go on...

City 2 Bristol Rovers 0

Joel Randall scored his first senior goal for Exeter City as they beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 to top their Checkatrade.com Trophy group.

The Grecians went into the final game of the group knowing they had already qualified for the knockout stages, but also that only a win against Bristol Rovers in 90 minutes would be good enough to top the table.

And they rose to the challenge as Jonathan Forte flicked home Chiedozie Ogbene's low cross shortly into the second half before Randall added his strike eight minutes' from time.

Both teams named youthful sides for the game,...

Hogg 'excited' about Chiefs move

Stuart Hogg says he’s “excited” at the challenge that lies ahead after he today sealed a move to Gallagher Premiership outfit Exeter Chiefs. The 26-year-old will head to Sandy Park at the start of next season on a two-year deal, bringing to a close a hugely successful spell with Glasgow Warriors. The Scotland and British Lions full-back is Rob Baxter’s first confirmed signing ahead of the 2019/20 season, but his arrival will be seen as significant one for the Devonians, who have established themselves as one of the leading clubs not just in England, but in Europe as well in recent years. “...

Grecians exit Emirates FA Cup despite sprited second half display

Exeter City fell to a 3-2 defeat in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup against Blackpool.

Three first-half goals for the Tangerines gave the visitors what proved to be an unassailable lead at St James Park, despite a phenomenal effort from the Grecians in the second-half that left them a goal short of what would have been an incredible second-half comeback.

Matt Taylor made changes to last week’s starting XI in response to the sheer number of injuries the Grecians are struggling with at the moment, and fielded a very youthful bench to complement a side bereft of some...

Stars of the future secure Chiefs win against Harlequins

It's been the breeding ground of future stars at Exeter for many a year and today the Chiefs were able to unearth some new sparkle as they cemented their position at the top of Pool One in this season's Premiership Rugby Cup with victory over visiting Harlequins.

In a dominant display from Ricky Pellow's side, they not only preserved their unbeaten record in the competition this term, but they underlined the quality that exists within the playing ranks at Sandy Park.

Whereas many Premiership rivals took the opportunity to re-introduce a number of their top guns ahead of...

Odds on Exeter City earning promotion this season drift

The odds on Exeter City earning promotion this season have drifted further out after the club’s winless streak was extended to four games at the weekend. The Grecians were trailing 2-0 to promotional rivals Tranmere when Dean Moxey was sent off and that effectively ended all hope of staging a comeback. It means Exeter City have taken just two points from their last four games and that has seen them fall seven behind league leaders Lincoln City. Yet it is a long old season and there is plenty of time for them to turn things around, with some massive games lying on the horizon.

A...

Exeter Chiefs rediscovered their winning formula for the first time in a month, but they were made to fight all the way in the defence of their Premiership Rugby Cup crown by visiting Bath Rugby.

Halloween may have been at the start of the week, but Ricky Pellow's side were given a second half fright as the visitors produced a powerful fightback to leave the majority inside Sandy Park sweating until the final whistle.

The Chiefs had looked good value up until the hour mark, leading through tries from James Short, Ollie Devoto and Tom O’Flaherty and the boot of full-back Joe...
