Harlequins Women v Exeter Chiefs Women

Merryn Elworthy will make her 100th appearance in a Chiefs jersey as domestic women’s rugby returns with the PWR Cup on Saturday.

Having made her 99 previous appearances as Merryn Doidge, Elworthy will make her milestone appearance under her new surname following her wedding in the summer.

The 24-year-old played in her first game for Chiefs against in Gloucester-Hartpury in October 2020 after making the move to Sandy Park from Bristol Bears Women.

HM Coastguard launches a new film featuring Akinfenwa, to highlight the hidden dangers of the coast and urging the public to stay ‘Coast Clever’ ahead of half term. Coastguard is called to around 36,000 incidents each year – with peak times happening in the summer, bank holidays and half term time. This figure has increased by 50% in 4 years, with 24,000 incidents reported in 2018.

The region’s biggest esports event has returned for its second year, as five colleges announce a partnership with Tech South West.

Esports, or competitive gaming, is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, with a global revenue of over $1bn and an audience of 474m in 2021, according to Newzoo.

Referee Emily Willett from Coalville, Leicestershire, was this week nominated by the RFU as the third referee who will join 49 other inspiring female officials at Twickenham this November – all to inspire more women into refereeing.

Just a few short weeks into the rugby season and the Exeter Chiefs have made a promising start.

The Chiefs came out fighting during the opening rounds of this season’s Gallagher Premiership, winning all three of their first games. Round one saw the Chiefs beat the Leicester Tigers by 24 points to 20, with Patrick Schickerling scoring the winning try in the 80th minute. The Chiefs continued in round two, defeating Worcester Warriors with a score of 36-21, before finishing round three with a score of 43-42 against Quins.
