Harlequins Women v Exeter Chiefs Women

Merryn Elworthy will make her 100th appearance in a Chiefs jersey as domestic women’s rugby returns with the PWR Cup on Saturday.

Having made her 99 previous appearances as Merryn Doidge, Elworthy will make her milestone appearance under her new surname following her wedding in the summer.

The 24-year-old played in her first game for Chiefs against in Gloucester-Hartpury in October 2020 after making the move to Sandy Park from Bristol Bears Women.

At Twickenham Stadium last weekend, Rheanna White and Holly Feller from Barnstaple, Devon joined 48 other inspiring female referees to mark the launch of a new campaign with the aim of attracting more female officials to the sport.

Brought together by The Rugby Football Union (RFU) and ACME Whistles ahead of the clash between England Men and Japan, the 50 referees surrounded the national flags on the pitch, alongside the players and dignitaries during the national anthems, in front of the 81,000 strong crowd.

A large majority of people in Britain think the World Cup should not be held in Qatar because of its position on LGBTQ+ rights. A recent poll found that only 43% of people think that England and Wales should take part, while 39% think they should not.

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, attracting punishments of up to seven years in prison. Despite this and other serious human rights concerns, FIFA members voted in 2010 to award the 2022 tournament to the Gulf state.

Local sports clubs have a chance to win a £10,000 lump sum as part of the Proud To Pitch In initiative, a grassroots funding scheme by Greene King IPA .
