Head coach Rob Baxter says he is encouraged by the way his Exeter Chiefs have reported back for pre-season training this week.

Just a handful of weeks after bringing the curtain down on the 2013/14 season - one which brought about a first piece of major silverware for the Devon club - the Chiefs regrouped on Monday for the start of their build-up to the new campaign.

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter welcomed back the majority of his playing squad for the first day of pre-season.

Among those on show were summer signings Thomas Waldrom, Mitch Lees, Ryan Caldwell and Tomas Francis, whilst there was the encouraging sight of Brett Sturgess, Jack Nowell and Damian Welch all taking part after recent injuries.

Bicton College will next year join the AASE league (Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence) for the 2014 season starting in September.

Cycle speedway taster a success

Just a few weeks ago, British Cycling coaches and top Cycle speedway riders came to Exeter to offer a ladies only cycle speedway taster session.

The event which took place alongside a Cycle Speedway Women’s League competition, was a roaring success, as the girls who took part learnt the ropes of Cycle Speedway.

The sport, which is an up and coming event in British Cycling, is not dissimilar to the popular Motorbike Speedway that many flock to go and watch.

Exeter Golf and Country Club’s 12 and under boys team secured the Devon Aegon Team Tennis Division Two title after double success over the weekend.

On Saturday, they hosted Exwick Tennis Club in the penultimate match of the season. The match began with the doubles rubbers which were both won in straight sets by the home pairs. Marcus Kay and Rio Turl secured a 6-3 6-2 victory whilst Zak Wilton-Davies and Henry Guy came through 6-3 6-4.

McCoy takes a double at Newton before Ladies Day

Next Tuesday sees the social highlight of the season at Newton Abbot with the popular St Austell Brewery, Ladies’ Day, mixing fashion with an evening of summer jumps racing.

The racing action starts at 6.00pm with the Triton Galleries Maiden Hurdle over two miles and six furlongs and the curtain comes down with the Welcome Back Again Sean Dooner Lady Amateur Riders´ Handicap Hurdle at 8.45pm.

Lapford Football Club are “over the moon” to have won the Champions Cup in Division 5 of the Devon and Exeter Football League.

The cup was on display at their recent bingo night.

During the bingo night Adrian Mills thanked all the club’s supporters who regularly attend the fundraising bingo sessions.
