Townson joins Chiefs coaching staff

Glen Townson has joined Exeter Chiefs as the men’s assistant forwards coach.

Formerly the academy transition coach with Bristol Bears, the former lock forward makes the move to Chiefs having been in his transition role with Bears since September 2022.

Townson said: “It has been a real ambition of mine to be a Gallagher PREM coach, and to get the chance to do it at the Chiefs, one of the most successful clubs in the last decade, a club with rich history, was an opportunity I had to take.

“I’m hoping to add experience to a strong coaching group and build on the...

It’s free for kids and one of the best days out in the Easter holidays on March 31.

Exeter Racecourse’s annual family day, sponsored by Finlake Holiday Park, is a firmly established tradition with a host of activities to enjoy, and with horse racing firmly at its heart.

Take a peek behind the scenes with former jockey Ollie McPhail who now works for the British Horse Racing Standards and Education Trust. Dean Mumm to leave Chiefs

Exeter Chiefs have announced that skipper Dean Mumm is to return home to Australia at the end of the current season.

The 31-year-old – who is to rejoin former club the NSW Waratahs on a one-year deal – is hoping his return to Sydney will help him earn a recall to the Wallabies squad ahead of this year’s Rugby World Cup in England.

Signed by head coach Rob Baxter in 2012, the Auckland-born forward has been an inspired capture ever since he arrived at Sandy Park and his departure will certainly be belt, both on and off the field, here in Devon.

With 33 international...

Chiefs thwarted in nail-biter

Exeter’s hopes of becoming the first-ever side to lift back-to-back LV= Cup titles were thwarted at the death as Ben Spencer kicked a last-gasp penalty to give Saracens victory in a thrilling encounter in Northampton.

Having battled their way back from 20-6 down midway through the second half, the Chiefs were ultimately denied when the former Ivybridge Community College student punished Greg Bateman’s late indiscretion with a pressure kick.

It was a heart-breaking moment for the defending champions, who having led 6-3 at the break thanks to two penalties from skipper Ceri...

Exeter City win at Cheltenham

Match report: Cheltenham 1 Exeter City 2

Exeter City claimed a first ever win at Whaddon Road, with Tom Nichols and Graham Cummins striking in a 2-1 win for the Grecians against Cheltenham Town.

Nichols’ deft finish gave Exeter a midway through the first-half, and Cummins was alive to a goalkeeper spillage to firm up the scoreline a few minutes from time.

A late own-goal gave the Robins hope but ultimately City held out to claim the victory.

With Alex Nicholls missing completely through injury and Clinton Morrison only fit enough for the bench, David Wheeler...

Game on for Honiton's petanque pitch

East Devon District Council has been working hard with Honiton Town Council and local resident Chris Bigmore on a project that has ended up providing residents with a new petanque 'terrain' or playing area. Petanque is a game where players throw metal ‘boules’ with the aim of getting as many of their own closer to the wooden Jack than their opponents.

The Petanque terrain at the Mountbatten Sports and Social Club was officially opened on 19 March by the Devon Regional President of the English Petanque Association, John Thatcher. Several residents who were already playing Petanque...

Exeter Chiefs side to face Saracens

Ricky Pellow believes victory for Exeter Chiefs in this weekend’s LV= Cup Final would eclipse the efforts of last season when the Devon club lifted the trophy for the first time.

Twelve months ago the Chiefs made the most of home territory and a bumper Sandy Park following to overcome rivals Northampton Saints 15-8.

On Sunday, the defending champions will take to the field at Franklin’s Gardens (3pm) looking not only to overcome fellow finalists Saracens, but at the same time become the first-ever club to win the Anglo-Welsh crown back-to-back.

It’s another tall...
