Lavelle’s Silver Thorn too strong in Exeter feature

The Emma Lavelle-trained Silver Thorn won the feature Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, making virtually all the running to score by two lengths from co-favourite El Granjero at Exeter yesterday, where the sun shone on a beautiful day at Haldon Hill.

The grey had won his previous start at Doncaster in December, with his trainer reporting that he was progressing well. Lavelle said: “He’s still learning and he only ever really does as much as he needs to, which is great as he’ll keep improving. We’re very pleased with how he’s handled the ground today, which means he’ll go on...

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter was full of praise for his side as they made it back-to-back victories in this season’s European Champions Cup with a 31-14 victory at home to ASM Clermont Auvergne.

Despite trailing 14-10 at the break to last season’s beaten finalists, the Chiefs produced a stunning second half showing that yielded not only 21 unanswered points, but also saw them claim the all-important four-try bonus point.

Early on, however, it was the Top 14 leaders who used the elements to put themselves in charge as they claimed converted tries through Hosea Gear...

Chiefs side to face Clermont

Rob Baxter insists he and his squad need no reminding of the importance of tomorrow’s European Champions Cup encounter with visiting ASM Clermont Auvergne at Sandy Park (5:15pm). Having kicked off their return to Europe’s top tier with defeat to the Ospreys, the Devon club rediscovered their winning formula by securing a bonus point victory at home to Bordeaux-Begles. That success means as they prepare to hit the halfway stage of the competition, they lie second in Pool 5 behind the Welsh region who themselves came unstuck to Clermont at the Stade Marcel Michelin last time out. But whereas...

Baxter confirms double injury blow

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter says its likely England star Henry Slade will be sidelined for roughly four months after sustaining a broken leg and ankle damage in his side’s 41-27 win over Wasps on Saturday.

Centre Slade was stretchered off with just 15 minutes remaining at the Ricoh Arena following a tackle from home winger Sailosi Tagicakibau as he looked to clear out the Exeter playmaker.

Slade, 22, had a plate and wiring inserted during what Baxter described as ‘a pretty major operation’ on Sunday.

The loss of Slade is an untimely blow for both club and...

Exeter City emphatic winners!

Exeter City are through to the Third Round of the FA Cup for the first time in a decade as substitute Ollie Watkins secured Exeter City’s place with a composed finish two minutes before the end of normal time.

In a game in which the Grecians outclassed their League One opponents, Jordan Tillson had put the hosts ahead after nineteen minutes. City crafted several chances and in truth should have secured their place in Monday night’s FA Cup third-round draw with more time to spare, but it was to be Ollie Watkins that would have the final say, potentially setting up a tie against...
