From St James Park to the Euros: Tracking Exeter City Academy Players on the International Stage

As Europe’s biggest stars regroup for international duty, national team rosters for Euro 2024 are filled with familiar names - few of which trace their beginnings to the lower tiers of English football.

Exeter City’s academy may not make headlines, but its graduates are making tournament squads. And while attention builds toward summer fixtures and early Champions League predictions on many of the most popular and secure betting platforms, another narrative deserves recognition: players who started at St James Park and are now representing their countries on the international...

Welch up for the Welsh challenge

Damian Welch is expecting former club Scarlets to offer Exeter Chiefs a testing work-out in their opening pre-season fixture this Saturday (3pm).

The towering lock spent three years at the Parc Y Scarlets before heading to Sandy Park during the summer of 2012, where he has since established himself as a key figure within Rob Baxter’s first team plans.

With 88 appearances already to his name for the Devon club, the 34-year-old forward is hoping to kick-off the 2016/17 season on a high note by helping the Chiefs to see off the Welsh region.

The Chiefs endured their...

Nowell injury blow ahead of new season

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has confirmed England star Jack Nowell is likely to miss the start of the new 2016/17 season.

The 23-year-old, who was part of the victorious England side that won 3-0 against Australia this summer, recently underwent surgery on a thumb injury.

Whilst it is unclear at this stage just how long the Cornishman will be sidelined for, Baxter has already resigned himself to the fact that Nowell is likely to miss the three pre-season games, as well as the opening weeks of the Aviva Premiership campaign.

“Jack Nowell is out after an...

Ryan Harley scores as Exeter City beat Brentford in EFL Cup

Ryan Harley’s extra-time goal fired Exeter City into the second round of the EFL Cup as the Grecians beat Championship side Brentford 1-0 in a tight affair at St James Park. The midfielder’s first goal of the season capped off an excellent performance by City who had to battle hard at times, but with the impressive 15-year-old, and man of the match, Ethan Ampadu providing an assured display in central defence, the Grecians were well worth their victory. Paul Tisdale made three changes from the weekend’s season opener with...

Max’s winning time in the 13 – 16 age group was 1:25:19 - over two seconds faster than his last area final win in 2014. He also won the SW area final in the 8 – 12 category in 2012 and he has an amazing ten years’ experience of sailing...

Exeter City lose the opener

Exeter City opened their EFL League Two season with a 2-0 defeat at Blackpool in the first clash between the two sides since 2001.

Kyle Vassell’s first half goal gave the Seasiders the lead and an unfortunate own goal by Troy Brown condemned the Grecians to defeat.

It was a case of ‘what if’ for Exeter, who hit the post twice in the first half, but could not find a way past home goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

City handed debuts to three of their summer recruits with Pierce Sweeney starting at centre back, Lloyd James in central midfield and Robbie Simpson up front. Craig...

“I’m sure the lads are confident that we can go and beat any team in the league – or in a cup competition,” he said. “We have got a good, cemented team at the moment and the chemistry is there...

Paul Tisdale reflects on Exeter City’s “settled” pre-season

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale has praised a “settled” side as the Grecians now set their sights on the first game of the Sky Bet League Two season against Blackpool.

After winning all seven of their pre-season matches the Grecians are confident going into the season opener next Saturday, and boss Tisdale is delighted with the warm up campaign which has now put his side in an excellent position moving forwards.

Following City’s final pre-season win, a 3-0 victory over a Cardiff City XI, Tisdale reflected on the last seven matches.

He said: “It’s been a very...

Exeter City 3-0 Cardiff City XI: Grecians go into season opener full of confidence after yet another win

Exeter City will go into their Sky Bet League Two season full of confidence after beating a Cardiff City XI 3-0 at St James Park, to round off an excellent pre-season which saw the Grecians win all seven of their fixtures.

Two goals from Robbie Simpson, who looks to have settled well going into his first season with the club, and a first half strike from Lee Holmes made the difference for the home side, who once again impressed on a slightly controversial night in Devon.

It began with some confusion as fans made their way to St James Park expecting to see some high profile...
