From St James Park to the Euros: Tracking Exeter City Academy Players on the International Stage

As Europe’s biggest stars regroup for international duty, national team rosters for Euro 2024 are filled with familiar names - few of which trace their beginnings to the lower tiers of English football.

Exeter City’s academy may not make headlines, but its graduates are making tournament squads. And while attention builds toward summer fixtures and early Champions League predictions on many of the most popular and secure betting platforms, another narrative deserves recognition: players who started at St James Park and are now representing their countries on the international...

Cowan-Dickie targets new season ahead

Luke Cowan-Dickie admitted it was nice to “dust off the cobwebs” as he helped Exeter Chiefs make it two wins from two in pre-season with Saturday’s 25-19 victory over Ulster Rugby at Sandy Park.

The England international was getting his first taste of competitive action since June, when he came off the bench for Eddie Jones’ all-conquering side against Australia in Brisbane.

At the weekend, the 23-year-old Cornishman was given an hour’s work-out against the Irish province before being replaced by Tongan hooker Elvis Taione for the final quarter of the match.

But...

Rugby clubs unite to remember fallen heroes

Fallen heroes from the Devon and Ulster Regiments, which served at the Battle of the Somme, are to be remembered ahead of tomorrow’s pre-season rugby friendly between Exeter Chiefs and Ulster Rugby.

A new exhibition is being set up for the day at Sandy Park Stadium, the home of the Chiefs, to remember 3,237 Allied servicemen from the Devon and Ulster regiments who paid the ultimate sacrifice on the first day of battle on July 1, 1916.

In what will be a moving tribute to those killed in battle, the Exeter Suite will not only lay out 3,227 shrouds – 16 per cent of the 19,240...

Olympic medallist confirmed for Tour of Britain

Rio silver medallist Mark Cavendish will race this year’s Tour of Britain, in what will be his first race after the Olympics.

Tour of Britain organisers have announced the first top riders for this year’s Tour of Britain, with Britain’s record Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish leading the way, alongside fellow top sprinter André Greipel and former UCI World Hour Record holder Rohan Dennis. Cavendish, who has 30 stage victories in the Tour de France, won his first Olympic medal on Tuesday evening, taking Silver in the Omnium track event, and will be targeting the World Road...

Chiefs squad to face Ulster Rugby

Exeter Chiefs will continue their build-up to the new season tomorrow when they welcome Ulster Rugby to Sandy Park for their latest pre-season assignment.

Rob Baxter's side kicked off proceedings last weekend with a 45-3 thumping of the Scarlets on home soil, but they are expected to face a much tougher proposition from the Irish province who, incidentally, they will tackle twice in this season's European Champions Cup.

Forwards coach Rob Hunter said he and the squad were encouraged by their first run out, but said they would need to "crank things up" further this weekend...

Exeter City 0 Crawley Town 1: Match report

Crawley Town recorded their first ever victory over Exeter City as substitute Josh Yorwerth fired a home from just inside the box.

City manager Paul Tisdale made three changes to the side that lost to Hartlepool United on Saturday, with Ethan Ampadu breaking another club record as he made his league debut for City aged 15 years, 11 months and two days.

He joined the reinstated Matt Oakley in the centre of defence, while Ryan Harley recovered from knee injury, picked up against Brentford last Tuesday, to return to midfield.

Crawley started the match brightly as Enzio...

Turner looks to build on Scarlets win

Lachie Turner wants Exeter Chiefs to build on their encouraging start to pre-season by delivering another big display against visiting Ulster Rugby this Saturday at Sandy Park (3pm).

The Australian international was among a 30-strong group of players who were given their first run out of the new 2016/17 season when the Chiefs defeated the visiting Scarlets 45-3 at the weekend.

Although not on the scoresheet himself, Turner – who arrived in Devon during the second half of last season after a spell playing in France with RC Toulon – took the opportunity in the summer sunshine...

Exeter City 1 Hartlepool Utd 2: Match report

Exeter City could not build on an impressive cup win over Brentford on Tuesday as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Hartlepool United on Saturday.

The Grecians took the lead in the first half as Liam McAlinden bagged his first goal for the club, but the home side were hit with a couple of sucker punches midway through the second half as goals Michael Woods and Billy Paynter turned the game on its head in matter of minutes.

City were without a number of first team players going into the game. Ryan Harley, who scored the winner against Brentford in the EFL Cup on Tuesday,...

Chiefs kick off season with six-try victory

Rob Baxter challenged his troops to deliver in battle ahead of their opening pre-season fixture against the Scarlets at a sun-baked Sandy Park.

Keen to ensure his class of 2016/17 hit the new season firing on all cylinders, the Exeter Chiefs head coach said it was vital those given their chance against the Welsh region made the most of the opportunity afforded to them.

In an often one-sided encounter, last season’s Aviva Premiership runners-up simply had too much in all departments for the Scarlets, whose scant reward on a sizzling summer’s day was a first half penalty from...

Chiefs line-ups for Scarlets clash

Rob Baxter has warned his Exeter Chiefs squad they can ill afford to ease into the new 2016/17 season as opportunities to impress could well be scarce.

The Devon kick-off the first of three pre-season games tomorrow at home to the Scarlets (3pm) and Baxter is looking to give a large nucleus of his troops the chance to impress.

Although many of the club’s clutch of international names will sit out this first run-out after returning to pre-season training later than their team-mates, Baxter is still able to parade two powerful line-ups for the visit of the Welsh region to...
