Triple gold European medals for green-minded running star Innes Fitzgerald

Exeter student running sensation Innes Fitzgerald has won gold at the European Cross-Country Championships, bagging her a triple gold win in her age bracket.

On Sunday, Innes, 19, won the 4.5k race in Lagoa, Portugal for a third consecutive year, this year with a time of 14.35. Her 32-second lead is the biggest margin of victory in women’s under 20 racing in the history of the events. It caps a year that has seen the rising star smash a number of under 20 records.

It comes after the second year Exercise and Sport Sciences student at the University of Exeter was named...

Clermont Auvergne 48 Chiefs 26

So often the bridesmaids when it comes to Europe and the Champions Cup, maybe this is the year where ASM Clermont Auvergne have their big day in the sun.

For a number of years the French giants have got halfway down the aisle, only to be jilted right at the last minute by a bitter rival who has subsequently claimed the prized crown.

On this latest showing, however, Europe’s elite need to take serious note. Exeter Chiefs were not only dumped out of this season’s competition by a ruthless first half showing at the Stade Marcel Michelin, but it was the manner in which they...

Woodburn up for the fight in France

Olly Woodburn insists he and his Exeter Chiefs team-mates are “up for the fight” ahead of Saturday’s crucial European Champions Cup encounter away to ASM Clermont Auvergne (2pm).

Bottom of the pile in Pool 5 at the start of last weekend, Exeter’s 31-19 home win over Ulster Rugby has lifted Rob Baxter’s side to second in the standings behind their French hosts - and in with a potential chance of claiming one of the remaining spots in the last eight of the competition.

In a somewhat similar scenario to last season, where the Chiefs edged through on the final day with victory...

Based around the successful format of the BBC show, the stars will have their sporting knowledge tested during a...

Chiefs side to face ASM Clermont Auvergne

Whether history repeats itself for Exeter Chiefs in the European Champions Cup only time will tell, but head coach Rob Baxter says he and his team will not go down without a fight.

With just one qualification round remaining in Pool 5, Devon’s finest will head across the English Channel in buoyant mood for tomorrow’s encounter against ASM Clermont Auvergne at the Stade Marcel Michelin (2pm).

Back-to-back victories in Europe, the latest of which came last Sunday at home to Ulster Rugby, has seen the Chiefs move off the foot of the table, leapfrogging the Irish province and...

More than 48 tonnes of real snow are to be delivered by lorry to the University’s Streatham Campus and dumped outside the Forum to create a giant ski slope.

The spectacular transformation of Forum Hill is being organised for a regional snow sports competition which will see 30 skiers and snowboarders from six universities from the South West region perform freestyle tricks.

Rails and boxes will be placed at various points down the slope (or Chill Hill) in what is known as a rail jam. This will allow the contestants to perform various tricks whilst descending, ensuring...

Happy Campo targeting Clermont in Europe

Italian international Michele Campagnaro says confidence is high within the Exeter Chiefs camp ahead of Saturday's European Champions Cup trip to ASM Clermont Auvergne.

After a disappointing start to their Pool 5 campaign, Rob Baxter's side have bounced back in their last two fixtures, recording a win at Bordeaux-Begles last month, before seeing off Ulster 31-19 at Sandy Park last Sunday.

Those two victories have been part of a stunning run of form from the Chiefs, which has seen them lose only once in their last nine games, and has helped to lift them from the foot of...

Luke Croll has extended his loan with Exeter City until the end of the season. Croll, 22, joined the Grecians on August 31 and has played 12 times for the club this season. The Crystal Palace defender has picked up four clean sheets during that time with his impressive performances at the centre of defence. Croll’s loan deal runs until May 6 but can be extended if the Grecians are in the play-offs.

Lifeline for Chiefs after battling display

Rob Baxter’s Exeter Chiefs side threw themselves a European lifeline by dispatching of visiting Ulster with a five-star showing at Sandy Park.

Having started the day bottom of the pile in Pool 5, all of a sudden the Devonians are now up to second in the standings and in with a potential shout of qualifying for the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions Cup.

For that to happen, they will have to travel to leaders ASM Clermont Auvergne and garner a bonus point victory at the Stade Marcel Michelin. Even then, however, that still may not be enough, should results elsewhere...

Chiefs side to face Ulster

Matters in the Aviva Premiership may take a step back for the next month, but for Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter there can be no let up in intensity from his in-form side as they prepare for a crucial block of cup fixtures.

Having lost just once in their last eight matches in English rugby’s top flight, Devon’s finest have moved nicely into the division’s top three, and in prime position to attack what will be an exciting second half to the season.

In the Cups, the Anglo-Welsh version – which resumes in a fortnight’s time with a home date against Wasps – is also in a...
