Glen Townson has joined Exeter Chiefs as the men’s assistant forwards coach.

Formerly the academy transition coach with Bristol Bears, the former lock forward makes the move to Chiefs having been in his transition role with Bears since September 2022.

Townson said: “It has been a real ambition of mine to be a Gallagher PREM coach, and to get the chance to do it at the Chiefs, one of the most successful clubs in the last decade, a club with rich history, was an opportunity I had to take.

“I’m hoping to add experience to a strong coaching group and build on the...

Exeter Racecourse’s annual family day will be a feast of entertainment for racing fans with an eight race card coming under starters orders at 2.20pm and two pony races prior to that. With a host of free activities too and a running race for children down the home straight it will be an action-packed day of entertainment

A selling hurdle begins the day and runners include the Martin Keighley-trained The Wexfordian who was a well-backed favourite to land a two mile handicap chase at Southwell a couple of weeks ago, failing by a length and three quarters. Before that run he was...

Exeter Chiefs 38 Bristol Rugby 34

As the usual runners and riders position themselves for the final furlong, Exeter Chiefs have safely overcome their first seasonal hurdle by booking their place in the Aviva Premiership’s end of season play-offs.

On Grand National Day, Rob Baxter’s side notched up win number 12 of the campaign, but not before being given an almighty fright by basement battlers Bristol, who threatened to pull off a shock success in this entertaining local derby.

Thankfully, the Chiefs had too much in the tank for their near neighbours, sealing victory with a Thomas Waldrom double and further...

Rob Baxter has challenged his Exeter Chiefs players to continue driving up their standards as the club look to cement their place in this season’s Aviva Premiership play-offs.

With just four rounds of the scheduled season remaining, the Chiefs welcome local rivals Bristol Rugby to Sandy Park tomorrow for a full-blooded derby encounter (3pm).

Unbeaten in the league since late October, another maximum haul for Baxter’s side will not only guarantee a top four finish, but it will keep them firmly on course for one of the two home semi-final spots.

Baxter knows the...

Chiefs will get stronger, insists Woodburn

It's perhaps a sign of expectation levels at Sandy Park that even five-point victories are now being heavily scrutinised by Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter and his players.

Baxter admitted post-match following his side's 30-25 Aviva Premiership win over Sale Sharks that there were elements of Exeter's game that needed to be addressed - and that a repeat performance would not be looked upon favourably moving forward.

“I can’t be happy at us playing at that level and we need to shake ourselves up for the remainder the season,” said Baxter post-match at Sandy Park. “We...

Exeter City staged another remarkable comeback as they scored two late goals to beat Mansfield Town at Field Mill.

Steve Evans' Stags had led from the 38th minute of the match as Mal Benning curled home, but a strong second-half performance saw City create numerous chances to get back into the match. And, off the bench, Matt Oakley and Reuben Reid played crucial roles in helping City turn the match around. Ryan Harley levelled in the 84th minute and then, with the final kick of the game, Reid converted a penalty he had won to give City all three points.

Is the future of the Premier League homegrown footballers?

Any Premier League footballer subjected to chants of ‘he’s one of our own’ from supporters should consider themselves fortunate. Football fans love homegrown talent, and given the small number of players in the top flight who play for the club where they started out these days, it’s hardly surprising.

Every football club has its own culture, and any player who has come through a club’s youth ranks, especially if they happen to have been born in the area, will understand and share these values. While most players eventually leave the club they begin their career with, either in...
