Ryan Woods and Cheick Diabate both find new clubs following Exeter City departures
Former Exeter City players Ryan Woods and Cheick Diabate have found new clubs after their release from the club.
Woods has signed a two-year deal with Oldham Athletic. The move comes after Woods' departure from St James Park by mutual consent. The 31-year-old player brings with him a wealth of experience and leadership qualities that Oldham Athletic manager Micky Mellon is eager to incorporate into his squad as he looks forward to seeing the midfielder show what he can do on hesgoal TV.
Micky Mellon expressed his excitement about the new signing, stating: “Ryan has played at the highest levels in the Championship and has the type of character and quality we want in this group. His ability to control games, keep the ball moving, and his leadership both on and off the pitch will be crucial as we look to push on this season. This is a real quality addition, and one that we’re extremely happy with.”
Former Grecians player Ryan Woods also shared his enthusiasm about joining Oldham Athletic, saying:
"I’m really excited to be here and can't wait to get started. Oldham is a massive club with ambitious plans, and as soon as I heard those, I knew this was the right move for me. I want to bring my experience to help the team push on now, and hopefully achieve something special this season."
Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell expressed his gratitude towards Woods, acknowledging his significant contribution to the team. He said: "Ryan has been a pleasure to work with - a calm, experienced figure who played a key role in bringing the group together after a challenging period in January 2024. His technical quality and composure in possession gave us real control in games and were vital in helping the team finish the 2023/24 season strongly."
Caldwell has also respected Woods' decision to move closer to home, acknowledging the challenges he faced being away from his family. He wished Woods the best for his future endeavours.
In other news, former City defender Cheick Diabate has joined the Scottish Championship side St Johnstone, subject to international clearance. The 23-year-old player, who the Grecians released in the summer, has made the move north of the border.
Cheick Diabate expressed his excitement about joining St Johnstone, stating: "I’m really excited to get going and be part of this team. I spoke to the gaffer a few times, and it sounded like an exciting place to be. This is a good club to be at - and I realised that after my first hour in the door."
Diabate, known for his defensive skills, is looking forward to defending his new team's box and getting to know his teammates better. He added: “I’m a defensive player and like to defend my box. I like front-foot defending too, and I’m comfortable on the ball.”
The departure of Woods and Diabate from Exeter City marks a new chapter in their careers. Their addition to Oldham Athletic and St Johnstone, respectively, is expected to bring new energy and experience to these teams in the upcoming season.
