Exeter City have had a poor campaign so far in the 2023/24 season of League One in English football and currently find themselves in the relegation zone (at the time of writing) as we move into the second half of the season, along with Carlisle, Cheltenham, and Fleetwood.

Here is a quick look at their chances of survival and what we can expect from Exeter City's relegation battle between now and the end of the season.

How have Exeter City done so far in the league?

Exeter City have not done too well this season. After 24 games played, they only have 23 points, having won just 6 games.

They have managed to draw 5 games and lose 13; during that time, they have only found the back of the next 16 times. They have also conceded 36 goals, which gives them a -20 GD (goal difference).

In that time, they have suffered a few heavy defeats in the league and the cup, one of which was the 9-0 drubbing by Reading in the group stage of the Football League Trophy in mid-September.

On October 3, they lost 4-1 away to Charlton in the league. They lost 3-0 away on November 11 to Fleetwood, who are currently at the bottom of the league. Just two weeks later, on November 25, they travelled away to play Bolton in the league and lost 7-0.

Their most recent defeat on January 1 saw them lose 3-2 away to Reading.

Will Exeter City get relegated from League One?

To find out just how likely it is that Exeter City will get relegated from League One at the end of the season, we must first look at the latest relegation odds and football betting tips.

For example, Exeter City are currently the fourth odds-on favourite team to be relegated at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. If you were to bet on this particular market right now, you would be looking at average odds of around 9/10 (in the fractional odds format).

In other words, there's a 52.60% IPR (implied probability rate) that Exeter will be playing football next year in League Two. Let's compare these odds with three other teams who are most likely to go down with them:

  • Team: Cheltenham. Fractional odds: 2/5. Chance of going down: 71.40%
  • Team: Fleetwood. Fractional odds: 3/10. Chance of going down: 76.90%
  • Team: Carlisle. Fractional odds: 1/4. Chance of going down: 80.00%

Four teams are guaranteed to be relegated each year, and it's looking like Exeter City might be one of those teams.

Upcoming fixtures

Exeter City have an uphill struggle between now and the end of the season and have many hard upcoming fixtures still to play. On January 6, they host Carlisle, and then on January 13, they travel away to play Blackpool.

Their next league game is on January 20 against Cambridge United at home, and then on January 23, they travel away to play Bristol Rovers. Their final game in January is on Saturday 27 in an away fixture against Barnsley.

In February, they play Bristol Rovers (home), Peterborough (home), Wigan Athletic (away), Derby County (home), Lincoln City (away), and Fleetwood (home).

Final thoughts

Things aren't looking good for Exeter City in League One right now. However, anything can happen in football, and you should always remember that no matter how certain the odds might seem for any betting market, no bets in football are ever guaranteed.

A lot can happen between now and the end of the season, and Exeter won't just step aside and let everyone walk all over them. They now find themselves in an epic relegation battle and hope to get as many wins as possible before it's too late.
