When you first bring a pool table home, there are a few accessories you just know you'll need from day one.  A set of pool balls, some cues, some chalk, a triangle rack and a table cover are all obvious essentials that will let you start playing straight away and help protect your table from any damage.

But to really take your game to the next level, there are some other must-have accessories that a lot of players only discover later on. These often overlooked add-ons can make all the difference to both your game and the way you look after the table. Whether it's giving you an edge when it comes to tricky shots, keeping the table looking and playing its best, or just helping you set up your shots properly, these are the kind of things that are well worth having in your armoury.

Table Brush

A table brush is an absolute must-have billiard table accessory for keeping your table in top nick. It's used to gently sweep up chalk dust, fluff and other debris from the cloth surface without damaging the fibres.

Regularly brushing the table helps keep the playing surface smooth and even, which is vital if you want to make accurate shots. Over time, it also helps lengthen the lifespan of the tablecloth by stopping dirt from getting stuck in the fabric.

A good table brush is one with soft but effective bristles that do the job without damaging the cloth, and a shape that lets you get in the corners and edges with ease, so you can get the whole job done properly.

Rest Heads

Rest heads are essential for any tricky shots that are just out of your reach. They clip securely onto a rest stick and give you a solid point to aim at, letting you keep your cue steady and accurate even if you can't get close to the ball. Without one, you're forced to either stretch or contort yourself to get to the shot, which can mess with your technique and make your game suffer.

Rest Sticks

Rest sticks really get along with rest heads, letting you reach over the table with a bit more ease. As the mechanical rest's handle, they act as a steady guide when the cue ball is a bit out of reach. With the rest stick and rest head working together, you get a solid support that helps with accuracy on those tricky long shots. This lets you take control, no matter how far out the cue ball is, without having to get all twisted up trying to get into position.

Table Marking Tools

Table markers are super useful for getting set up right on the pool table. They help players or pros mark off the exact spots on the cloth for where they want to place the balls, practice their routine or get the table just so for alignment. This is especially useful for structured practice where you need to get everything just right so you can focus on your game rather than adjusting your setup all the time. By keeping the starting position the same, these tools help players work on their technique rather than having to think about setup all the time.

Cue Extensions

Cue extensions are a great way to add a bit more reach to your cue when you need it. They're super handy for shots that are just a bit too far out, but not far enough to need a full-on mechanical rest. By adding a bit more length to the cue, players can stay in their natural stance and still get a smooth delivery, which is good for both comfort and control. This makes cue extensions a useful extra for players who want to be able to get to the shots without having to switch between a bunch of different pieces of equipment.

Ball Cleaning and Polishing Tools

Ball cleaning and polishing tools are pretty crucial for keeping your pool balls in good shape over time. As you use them, they pick up chalk, oils, and dust, all of which can affect how smooth they roll and how accurate they are. Regular cleaning gets that smooth finish back, so you can get a truer roll, better accuracy, and less friction on the cloth. Besides improving your game, keeping your balls clean will also help cut down on wear to the table, so your setup lasts longer.

Table Napping Blocks

A table napping block is a kind of billiard table accessory you don't normally see outside of more specialist environments like clubs or the homes of serious snooker enthusiasts. Their main job is to look after the nap of the cloth - that's the way the fibres lie. Now, while it may seem like a small point, getting the nap just right can make all the difference in how the balls behave on a table.

Keeping the nap in line helps to create a really consistent and predictable playing surface. It's not something you need to worry about if you just play the odd game or two at home, but if you're looking to host a tournament or play at a high level, you'll find table napping blocks to be an absolute essential.

Snooker Table Iron

A snooker table iron is one of those really useful tools that only gets used now and then, but when you need it, it's a lifesaver. It's a specialised tool that's gently heated up and then run over the cloth to get rid of any tiny creases or marks that can start to build up after a while. It's not for everyday cleaning like you might do with a brush; it's more for fine-tuning the cloth to get it looking perfect.

It's not about making the table look flashy; it's about getting the surface just so, so the cue ball rolls smoothly without any bumps or uneven bits to throw it off course. When you use one properly, it adds up to a much bigger difference than you might think - especially if you're playing at a high level.

Table Ring Nets

Eventually, snooker table ring nets just start to wear out from all the use. The repeated hitting of the balls starts to fray the material, and before long, it starts to lose its grip. When this happens its a good idea to replace them, not just for the sake of the table's looks, but for the fact that they need to be able to catch the balls and perform reliably. You don't want your table to start feeling a bit dodgy when you're in the middle of a match.

Cotton ring nets are the best kind to go for; they're made from thicker material and are built to last. They're worth the extra cash as they can handle a lot more use than the standard ones and will save you money in the long run by not having to keep replacing them. They come in sets of six, so you can replace all the pockets at once and have a nice, consistent look to your table.
