Community Trust keen to build on success of Futsal tournament

There was success for Newtown FC at the inaugural men’s Futsal Masters competition last weekend, run by Exeter City FC’s Community Charitable Trust. Twelve teams entered the competition at St Peter’s C of E School in Quarry Lane, Heavitree,  with Newtown FC running out 3-1 winners by beating North Tawton FC in the final.

The competition was set up to raise awareness of the benefits of playing Futsal as opposed to traditional five-a-side football and now the Trust are looking for more five-a-side teams to join the first-even men’s futsal league in Exeter, which will be starting on Sunday 6th January at St James High School in Summer Lane, Beacon Heath.

Futsal is a fast, exciting form of indoor football with five players per side and is all about quick, controlled passing and close-range shots. Futsal is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and is the only form of indoor football recognised by FIFA.

“We were delighted with the success of the competition and are very keen to get the league up and running,” says Jamie Vittles, the Head of Community for the Trust. “If you play five-a-side with a group of friends or colleagues come and give futsal a go - you won’t be disappointed.”

All teams registering with the new league will receive free tickets for an Exeter City FC first-team fixture at St James’ Park. The only requirements for the league is that players need to be over 16 and wear trainers and shinpads, plus a playing strip and the cost per game is £16.
